Milica Z. Bookman earned a doctorate in economics and holds degrees from Brown University, London School of Economics, and Temple University. Unique and fascinating

This is an excellently researched and written book that is difficult to categorize. It is a superb lesson in economics woven into the "magical thinking" about the after-life. It is surprising that a book covering such a serious scholarly subject can be so accessible. The book manages to draw you into a subject you have probably seldom thought about and you will be enriched for the journey. A memorable read.

Don't worry, Montezuma's Revenge should be taken out on Spain not America. This first hand account illustrates what a bunch of determined guys can do with super military advantage and help from ticked off locals. Don't let your knowledge of Mexican history be sacrificed.

Twenty years later, the journey begins again

As in the first two editions of "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain", Dr. Betty Edwards once more presents the beginning student of drawing with that same seemingly impossible task: copy a Picasso sketch. . .upside down!

And thus begins the journey into that part of the brain that most of us didn't know exists, where we meet the artistic genius within us all. True to her scientific approach to teaching the basics of drawing, Dr. Edwards updates her twice-before best-seller with over 50% new material based on recent research into the workings of the human brain. Some lessons are moved around and to her list of the 5 basic skills that make up realistic drawing (perception of edges; negative space; relationships; light and shadow; and of the whole) Dr. Edwards adds 2 more: memory and imagination.

Perhaps most telling are the "before and after" illustrations showing how much one can learn in just a few days of instruction and diligent practice. The obviously painful, labored scrawls of adults discouraged from drawing since childhood sit next to drawings that exude confidence and ease. The reader is amazed when he or she can look upon a similar pair of images produced in the first few days of reading the book.

Amazingly, the paperback cover price of this most recent edition is a single dollar more than the 1989 cover price. Consider it a bargain.

Excellent insight

If you really want to immerse yourself in learning to draw, this is a very good book to begin with. A little too much theory about the brain, etc. that contributes little to learning to draw, but otherwise extremely helpful, instructive and encouraging. The emphasis on learning to become "reasonably passable" in just 5 days is misplaced, in my opinion. It certainly is taking me longer than 5 days - or 5 weeks for that matter, but that should not be the issue anyway. If you can devote at least a couple of hours per day on drawing, this book can be an excellent guide alongside your own dilligence.

Creating successful advertising is no longer about making up cute slogans, clever puns and wacky ideas. Or hiring celebrities (whom you'd like to meet). It's about strategic thinking. That's why this book is so important for any copywriter, art director or planner. Great creative people are intuitive strategists. But it doesn't hurt to have a manual. This book is it. I wish I'd had it 30 years ago.

What I really like about this book:

- Layman's terms. Alice does not sound like one of those ad execs that will pound you with one media term after another, she all boils it down to simple and digestible recommendations.
- Examples are current and on trend, not 40 to 50 year ago ads that you might not have experienced (or seen) yourself.
- Great guide to mastering how to crack the brief and making one.

What I don't like about this book:
- The cover title's typography.. is that the Kellogg's K? Hmm, clever.. but I wish it looked classier.

At first I was sceptical. I thought I wasted my money on a book that covers the creative brief and what it is. Now it does go threw the steps that we all know but it really goes deeper than that. It helps you understand what separates a good creative brief from a lousy one and gives examples. I definitely would recommend it to professionals and students.

Disappointed

When I purchase a book, I tend to choose books that are a bit longer , because in reality who wants to pay 4.99 for a book that only has 100 pages. This book stated it had over 300 pages, and from the sample seemed like a great book. Until I reached then end, the book stating I was only 68% done with book. The rest of the book, excerpts to another book. I feel dooped. I feel cheated barely getting 2/3 of the book. I wish authors like this would be honest in the length of the book and not use nearly half the book to advertise other books. Deeply disappointing and won't buy from author again.

Matchmaking a success

At first I was a little skeptical on the whole matchmaking concept but the way Dolly is described as a Texas gal with big hair and made up like a barbie doll had me laughing and excited to read about Logan and Avery being set up. These two couldn't be more different but yet they were kindred souls that just needed to be pushed into each other's arms to save each other. Avery needed to be completely saved from her ex boyfriend and Logan needed someone to set his ex girlfriend straight on the fact that their relationship was over and Logan would do right by her if in fact he needed to. Through many obstacles they helped each other and fell in love with each other. If Dolly didn't have her matchmaking business these two may never have met plus it helped that Logan is her nephew and she knew what type of woman he needed before he even did.

Logan seemed like such a jerk but he's so up front about it that you can't help but love him. Aunt Dolly is a larger than life character who you love from the start. Avery is the girl everyone wants as a best friend...and she sees something she can't believe! Thoroughly enjoyed this story and can't wait for the next installment!

Essential Reading

A stunning, heart-rending, highly-readable drama based on the tragic story of Procne and Philomela from Ovid's Metamorphoses. This version accentuates the friendship between the two sisters, the foolishness of their father, the king, who entrusts his daughters to Tereus, seeing him only as a "noble soldier," and ignoring that Tereus views women's bodies as the rightful spoils of war. This version also updates the ancient tale of rape and revenge with the testimony of recent victims of wartime rape (through the words of the Greek-style chorus of women). The tale is of course extremely violent and gruesome, without consolation, the only resolution coming in the final metamorphoses from agonized and brutalized human beings to sorrowful birds. Readers may well gasp and weep as they read. But I know of no other fictional account that better portrays the unredeemable pain of rape. Erin Shields took Ovid's story and made it live and breathe for the 21st Century. It is a must-read.

With the help of her best friend Chris, she's successfully dealt with the pain and emptiness caused by her parents' death. But can she deal with the drama that comes along with befriending the rowdy Nicholas Bauer and promiscuous Elle Stevens?

Enthralling, Riveting Must Buy Novel!

By far one of the best books I have yet to read. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a realistic tale of the tribunes and triumphs of high school and the dependance most teenagers have on one another especially in their darkest moments. If you don't decide to read this book you are missing out on one of the best I have read lately. It is well writen and keeps the reader engaged until the very end and then leaves the reader wanting more!

Readable and precise

Clark is one of those few scholars who can present a complicated topic in a very accessible way. She touches on the most important and interesting areas of child language acquisition, citing others' studies as well as her own research. You don't need any previous knowledge of this field to enjoy this book. I highly recommend it!

Heavy on data, not so much on readability

Although it was refreshing to read an account of language acquisition from the point of the view of Pragmatics, I felt the text was very dense and not organized well within the chapters. Dr. Clark includes information about many relevant experiments, but at times it was hard to distinguish her own interpretations from paraphrased citations. The chart dealing with phonetics also had quite a few errors.
I hope the second edition turns out to be better than this one!

Do Not Buy the Kindle Edition

The Kindle version of this book uses "locations" rather than page numbers, so it is not conducive to using it in a course or citing it in papers.
