About the Author
Max Brand is the best-known pen name of Frederick Faust, creator of such beloved characters as Destry and Dr. Kildare. Great Book, Great Author

I had never heard of Max Brand before I checked this book out at the library and I love him as a writer. I cannot think of one author today who could bring the flavor of the old west to mind like Brand did. His character descriptions really brought the story to life. While I am not a fan of westerns, I am a major dog lover, particularly of the stronger breeds. For me, this story was a page turner. I simply could not put it down. Brand has something exciting happening on every page and I was a captive audience from beginning to end. Great writing. They just don't make them like brand anymore.

An Outstanding Western Story

Comanche is a dog and a character in Brand's five star story, from start to finish. But the principal character is Single Jack Deems. The story is fiction, and is set in an unstated time, after railroads go west and before horses are replaced. Brand attributes acts to Comanche and Deems that might be hard to believe, except his writing skill makes them seem inevitable. If you can find enough time to read a book at one sitting, do it for this one.

Deems begins the story as an outlaw, temptation remains intense, and many of his actions continue in the outlaw vein. He has a good side, however, and Brand shows that as well. David Carlyle, "Another Land."

About the Author
David Lowenthal is Emeritus Professor of Geography and Honorary Research Fellow at University College London. He is a gold medallist of the Royal Geographical, the Royal Scottish Geographical and the American Geographical Societies, a Fellow of the British Academy and honorary D.Litt. Memorial University of Newfoundland. In 2010 he was awarded the Forbes Lecture Prize by the International Institute for Conservation. His books include The Heritage Crusade and the Spoils of History (1996), George Perkins Marsh, Prophet of Conservation (2000) and The Nature of Cultural Heritage and the Culture of National Heritage (2005).

Heritage and History-Friends or Foes?

Historian David Lowenthal, author of The Heritage Crusade and Spoils of History, has managed to provide both an engrossing account on the relationship between history and heritage and an entertaining piece of literary work. The book comprises of 10 chapters, each one dealing with the evolution that heritage has experienced aswell as the contribution it makes to our lives. After reading this book one comes away with a greater understanding and appreciation for our own inherited events and objects. His use of very relevant and at the same time very interesting examples, ranging from Greek mythology to America's Disney World, allows readers to bring to life the whole concept of heritage and history. I have to admit that prior to reading this book I had the naieve notion (though common one)that heritage equated to history. However Lowenthal was able to dispel this belief by providing vivid accounts on why these two elements are so different yet inextricably intertwined. This he does by highlighting the differences in the approach of biasness by both heritage and history and also the quest for truth and objectivity.Ultimately Lowenthal shows how both history and heritage work in contemporary society and how they compliment each other. His humour, knowledge on the subject and his style of writing makes this book trully a must read for all historians and potential historians too, infact anyone interested on the topic. Why this book sucks....

This book is horribly written, poorly constructed, and really fails to argue a cohesive point. It bounces around from anecdote to story, and if anything, proves the use of history, and condemns heritage.
I disagree with the author's premise, but he doesn't provide any substance to defend his opinion.
If I could rate this book any lower, I would.

Solid Story, Christian-themed but not overly church-y

This was a decent story. Solid writing with a good flow. It's pretty short (just under 200 pages, if I'm remembering the description correctly), which I think worked in its favor. I'll admit, I spent too much time thinking to myself, "oh, it's pretty much Twister with different people," but I think any tornado themed book, show, or movie brings out that comparison for me.
The story is about storm chaser, John, who is sucked into (pardon the pun) a mystery about a church pastor who may or may not be killing people who disagree with him. It seemed to be a Christian-themed book that was trying really hard to not be super church-y. As a Christian book, it's quite appropriate, I think, but, it is also like the author was almost trying to hide that fact. I think one's beliefs creep into any story one writes, despite trying to keep them neutral.
I would recommend this book to those looking for a quick, engaging way to pass a little time. In all, I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading more by this author.

SPENCER'S "BREAKING POINT" REINFORCES HER REPUTATION AS ONE OF AMERICA'S BEST TRUE CRIME WRITERS.

Suzy Spencer first came to my attention about seven years ago, and I was immediately impressed by the dynamic foreword motion of her narratives coupled with her ability to set the scene of events without belaboring every physical nuance from outdoor environment to details of window shades -- she knows how to capture your attention, and most importantly, tell the story. Her BREAKING POINT goes beyond the superficial coverage inherent in the limited word count of newspaper stories, or the soundbite analysis of infotainment disguised as news. Spencer gets into the heart and soul of every story she investigates, and brings, dare I say it, a "spiritual sensitivity" to the complexities of human existence. Mental illnesses are medical condition whether the result of in utero virus, injury or heredity. Sadly, recent research found that more Americans believe that evil acts are caused by invisible demons from hell than believe in medical diagnosis and treatment for mental health conditions. Spencer has a perceptive eye, a kind heart, and, if the atheists amongst us will pardon the phrase,God given talent. A good survey of the artist's life and works

In _Michelangelo_, Hibbard presents a unbiased account of Michelangelo's life in an enjoyable mix of historical narravitve and critical and contextual analysis. The writing is approachable with a minimum of high-brow art jargon. Hibbard also refrains from diving too deep into speculation about fine points such as sexuality and politics. This book is suited for those desiring an end-to-end introduction to the man and his art, or for those who have forgotten 90% of art survey 101, like me.

THE Basic Guide to Michelangelo and His Art

If you were to read only one text dealing with the great Michelangelo and his art, this would be the book. It is a succinct biography in which one also finds clear and well chosen discussions of the artistic works of the great Florentine. It would be fair to say that Professor Hibbard is a graceful guide to these works--he shows us the key elements of the sculpture, painting and architecture that made Michelangelo the preeminent figure of the Renaissance. And he presents them to us as the artist's life unfolds, so that we can understand the challenges met and problems solved at various stages in Michelangelo's development.

The book is filled with a large number of black and white photographs as well as plans and drawings which, together, help the reader understand each of the works being discussed. Indeed, the reader would be hard pressed to find more than a handful of opposing pages that do not have one or more illustrations. For those who are so inclined and long to see more of each work, they are titled so clearly that a quick search on line can bring plenty more to look at. But the illustrations provided in the book are more than sufficient for the reader's understanding.

If you are looking for a shocking expose of Michelangelo the man, with all of his secrets revealed (warts and all!), then you do not want to read this book. Professor Hibbard discusses Michelangelo's personality and personal life in detail, but always in the context of his creations. He writes with a deft and gentlemanly reserve that allows the reader to accept the facts without drawing unreasonable conclusions.

The conversations about the well-known works - the Pieta, the David, the Sistine Chapel ceiling and Last Judgment - are all clear and helpful. The on and off again relationships with various Medici and Popes provides a helpful understanding of how and why some of the artist's projects were unfinished, or completed in terms altogether different from their conception.

The discussions of the architectural contributions of Michelangelo are very good, and provide the reader with an appreciation of the sculptural qualities of these larger than life sculptures. Indeed, Hibbard's discussion of the Bibliotheca Laurenziana stairway and St Peter's are the best sort of architectural criticism to be found anywhere.

At the end of the book, but separate from the extensive bibliography, is a section called "Notes for Further Reading", which, if followed, could benefit the reader who wants to know more.

About the Author

Kathleen Stassen Berger completed her undergraduate education at Stanford University and Radcliffe College, earned her M.A.T. from Harvard University and an M.S. and Ph.D. from Yeshiva University. Her broad range of experience as an educator includes directing a preschool, teaching philosophy and humanities at the United Nations International School, teaching child and adolescent development to graduate students at Fordham University, teaching inmates earning paralegal degrees at Sing Sing Prison, and teaching undergraduates at both Montclair State University and Quinnipiac University. She has also been involved in education as the president of Community School Board in District Two in Manhattan.�

For over three decades, Berger has taught human development at Bronx Community College of the City University of New York. The students Kathleen Berger teaches every year come from diverse ethnic, economic, and educational backgrounds representing a wide range of interests and consistently honor her with the highest teaching evaluations.

This loose leaf version of the text is an amazing bargin. However, the publisher did not take into account how you would store the papers - the holes punched in it do NOT fit in a standard 3-ring binder, they are not spaced properly. This happened to every student in my course.

The text provides an informative, easy-to-read introduction to developmental psychology. Some students found the numerous side notes to be a bit distracting while going through their chapters.

I used this edition instead of the 2nd edition

I used this edition instead of the newer 2nd edition for my Fall 2014 Developmental Psy class. The chapters are the same as the newer edition with the only differences being page numbers and a few pictures that were added. Buy the 1st edition, its much cheaper and there is very little difference between this one and the 2nd edition.

Good Textbook, Not Much Difference From Newer Editions

I bought this to save the money from the newer edition and so far haven't noticed any needed changes with my tests at all, been passing them no problems! This is a pretty informative text about the lifespan from fetus to oldage, each chapter covering each stage of the human development. It is interesting for a parent, a psychology student, sociology student, future teacher or anyone really. Highly Recommended!

Short and to the point

As a teacher of professional writing and a former technical writer, I find this book is just enough for my students. It supplements the materials I create for my students with clear, concise discussions of the main formats used in professional settings. My students are not going to be hard-core technical writers, but most will have to be familiar with the day to day writing in offices, schools, and businesses. This book is just the ticket. should be compulsory reading to all

Being a technical writer and translator of technical and legal documents into (and from) the Polish language, I read this book with great interest. I also gave it to my son who is graduating with Honors in English at the private High School St.George's in Vancouver. His teacher also found it interesting and useful. We were all trying to figure out who could benefit from this book and decided that anybody from High School and College students to professional writers working on computer manuals or any other subject. I was specially impressed with Chapter 7 WRITE ETHICALLY. This could apply to people writing school assignments, preachers as well as writers of a State of the Union Address.
That should be a compulsory reading to all writing more than signatures. Considering cultural differences is mentioned, but I would add that if a technical manual is going to be localized into various languages, an original may have to be modified to match not only contents but also a syntax. In English questioner often makes a statement and asks "Isn't that true?"
In Polish every question must start from a proper word like What? Where? How much? And so on.

I know from personal experience that many computer programmers lack social skills and for this very reason they went into working with things, rather than dealing with people. They feel much more comfortable thinking and speaking in binary C+ rather than in any human language. I would like to see in a future editions of this book, some advice to the technical writers on a subject of art of extracting information from not very talkative programmers or designers. I use questions like: Could it do (blank)? If the answer is YES! I say why didn't you say so in a your product specifications? It sometimes takes days or even weeks to write good manual for the new or improved product, which is worth reading, according to the old adage: When everything else fails -- read the manual!

I am sure that this book will make many manuals to be more useful. 4 pages of CONTENTS, 4 pages of PREFACE and 6 pages of INDEX (in a fine print), for about 150 pages booklet, are excellent examples of work done well, to the benefit of the reader, who is saving time. It's the Authors -- Thomas E. Pearsall and Kelli Cargile Cook, who took lots of time to make it easy to read and remember.

Book is fine, seller questionable

I ordered this book for a class. Nothing wrong with the book itself; very informative. Received it in a timely manner--much sooner than estimated delivery date. However, I was disappointed to discovery it's a used book. I prefer to purchase new books so I can mark-up and make notes in for my own reference. I do not recall anything indicating that my books was a used book. Also, a few days after I received my book, I received another package from the same seller. Turns out it's another used book--a book on psychology! I never ordered a psychology book. In fact I never offered anything else from this seller! Could not find any contact info for the seller, so I could let her know that she sent me the Psychology book in error. Seller needs to be more cognizant about the way she markets her used books, and the be more conscientious with her mailing procedures.
