Henry Bieler Saved My Life!

This book, and the doctor who wrote it, saved my life. When I was 20, I was dying of SLE. I was taking 60 mg of prednisone, I had pericariditis, bi-lateral lung effusions and of my body was wracked with pain! But then I met Henry Bieler, MD, and I used his techniques to heal. I changed my died completely and followed his advice. The book seems somewhat "old fashioned" now, but Henry Bieler was born in the late 1800s, and I think he died in 1971, at 93 in a mountain climbing accident! What a way to go! What he said in 1965 is still valid!

I read this book many years ago and was delighted to find it is still in print! Dr. Bieler's advice was needed then and is even more needed now. Prescription drugs have taken over our lives and, although a few may be necessary, many are not and they are not improving our health or our lives. Food manufacturers are removing the nutrition from real food and replacing it with chemical supplements. Dr. Bieler is right - food is our best medicine. I would add "Real" before the title and advise people to visit their farmers' markets.

Timeless advice from a Doctor who went against current thought

While this book was written almost 50 years ago, the advice in it is just as good as it was in the mid 60's. In our current "fix it with drugs" mentality, this book offers strikingly opposing views about drugs and instead shows how the right diet can lead to a long and healthy life. Dr. Beiler offers a lot of medical reasons why and how food interacts with our bodies and the long term healthy results a person can achieve if one takes the time to learn how different foods interact with our organs. This is not a quick fix book. It is a book to be studied and help provide a foundation for further research.

After spending five years in Taiwan and Japan, he returned to Australia to take up a post at the University of Sydney, where he taught Chinese language, literature and history until his retirement in 2000. Not a Translation of the Avatamsaka Sutra - but a wonderful introduction to the teachings and practices of Huayen Buddhism

Note: This is not a translation of the Avatamsaka Sutra, as one of the 5-star reviewer wrote. However, it is exactly, what the subtitle of the book says: "An Introduction to the Teaching and Practices of Huayen Buddhism."

I came across Huayen Buddhism a decade or so ago from a reference in a book discussing A.N. Whitehead's "process theology." Being a lay Buddhist practitioner and having some remaining interest in Christianity, the possible connection intrigued me. The more I read, the more I had a sense of something being there that I wanted to know more about. Unfortunately, most of the available information on Huayen (in English) is quite academic, dense and not-aimed at the lay practitioner.

Ultimate Enlightenment is THE book that I would have loved to have had 10 years ago when I first wanted to know more about Huayen. It's clear, concise, non-academic, non-pedantic and is exactly the introduction that the subtitle says it is. There are a few selected writings from the Sutra, but primarily, this book is an explanation of the underlying beliefs and practices of the Huayen Buddhist school which still has adherents to date, though most historians consider that the school died out or was integrated into the Zen and Ch'an schools.

Prince has done us a favor in writing a clear introduction to the longest Buddhist sutra. Were anyone to ask me, "what should I read to learn more about Huayen?" I'd point them to this book first... even before the Sutra....

A Wonderful Translation of a Great Buddhist Sūtra!

This is a wonderful book! Universal Enlightenment is a beautiful translation of the most comprehensive Buddhist Sūtra, the Avataṁsaka Sūtra. It often draws parallels between the concepts presented in the Sūtra with those of well-known western philosophers which makes it relevant from many points of view. This book is a delightful read, both interesting and inspirational. It's a fascinating book for anyone interested in the history of eastern philosophy and a must-have book for those on the Eightfold Path.

About the Author
Emily S. Murphree Emily S. Murphree is associate professor of statistics in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She received her Ph.D. degree in statistics from the University of North Carolina and does research in applied probability. Professor Murphree received Miami’s College of Arts and Science Distinguished
Educator Award in 1998. In 1996, she was named one of Oxford’s Citizens of the Year for her work with Habitat for Humanity and for organizing annual Sonia Kovalevsky Mathematical Sciences Days for area high school girls. Her enthusiasm for hiking in wilderness areas of the West motivated her current research on estimating animal population sizes.

Bruce L. Bowerman is professor of decision sciences at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He received his Ph.D. degree in statistics from Iowa State University in 1974, and he has over 40 years of experience teaching basic statistics, regression analysis, time series forecasting, survey sampling, and design of experiments to both undergraduate and graduate students. In 1987, Professor Bowerman received an Outstanding Teaching award from the Miami University senior class, and in 1992 he received an Effective Educator award from the Richard T. Farmer School of Business Administration. Together with Richard T. O’Connell, Professor Bowerman has written 16 textbooks. These include Forecasting and Time Series: An Applied Approach; Forecasting, Time Series, and Regression: An Applied Approach (also coauthored with Anne B. Koehler); and Linear Statistical Models: An Applied Approach. The fi rst edition of Forecasting and Time Series earned an Outstanding Academic Book award from Choice magazine. Professor Bowerman has also published a number of articles in applied stochastic processes, time series forecasting, and statistical education. In his spare time, Professor Bowerman enjoys watching movies and sports, playing tennis, and designing houses.

Richard T. O’Connell is associate professor of decision sciences at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He has more than 35 years of experience teaching basic statistics, statistical quality control and process improvement, regression analysis, time series forecasting, and design of experiments to both undergraduate and graduate business students. He also has extensive consulting experience and has taught workshops dealing with statistical process control and process improvement for a variety of companies in the Midwest. In 2000, Professor O’Connell received an Effective Educator award from the Richard T. Farmer School of Business Administration. Together with Bruce L. Bowerman, he has written 16 textbooks. These include Forecasting and Time Series: An Applied Approach; Forecasting, Time Series, and Regression: An Applied Approach (also coauthored with Anne B. Koehler); and Linear Statistical Models: An Applied Approach. Professor O’Connell has published a number of articles in the area of innovative statistical education. He is one of the first college instructors in the United States to integrate statistical process control and process improvement methodology into his basic business statistics course. He (with Professor Bowerman) has written several articles advocating this approach. He has also given presentations on this subject at meetings such as the Joint Statistical Meetings of the American Statistical Association and the Workshop on Total Quality Management: Developing Curricula and Research Agendas (sponsored by the Production and Operations Management Society). Professor O’Connell received an M.S. degree in Decision Sciences from Northwestern University in 1973, and he is currently a member of both the Decision Sciences Institute and the American Statistical Association. In his spare time, Professor O’Connell enjoys fishing, collecting 1950s’ and 1960s’ rock music, and following the Green Bay Packers and Purdue University sports.

A great book, and one I have given as gifts to family and friends. The best modern effort to gaze on the beauty of God; the interest of which is severely lacking in this generation of believers. It will definitely help to stir passion for God, and will provide fresh material to use in private/personal worship. The content is contagious, and is even better when it is shared with others. Chapter 4 on What Handel Saw, is easily worth the price of the book. The chapter on Microscopic Majesty still lingers with me after several years of first reading it.

I will refrain from saying much more other than that I strongly encourage you to buy this book, maybe even an extra copy to share with someone you love. Read it prayerfully, not critically, and prepare to have your passion for the beautiful God, and the God of beauty, stirred afresh, or maybe even for the first time.

Don't miss this book!

I have been waiting and waiting for this book to be available in Kindle format! I purchased it when it first came out in paperback. It had a profound effect on my life. I was beginning to think that I was the only one who thought like Sam Storms in this area, other than John Piper and Jonathan Edwards. I have given it as first choice for a gift to people who I know want to grow in Christ. It has been the most life changing book I have read, other than Desiring God by John Piper. Sadly, many people I have given the book to have told me they "just didn't get it"! I can't recommend this book highly enough! For that matter, anything by Sam Storms comes highly recommended by me!

About the Author
Anthony Griffiths is Professor of Botany, Emeritus, at the University of British Columbia, Canada. His research focuses on the developmental genetics of fungi, using the model fungus Neurospora crassa. He has served as President of the Genetics Society of Canada and Secretary-General of the International Genetics Federation. Susan R. Wessler is Distinguished Professor of Genetics in the Department of Botany and Plant Sciences at the University of California, USA. Her research focuses on plant transposable elements and their contribution to gene and genome evolution. Wessler was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1998. As a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor, she developed and teaches a series of Dynamic Genome Courses where undergraduates can experience the excitement of scientific discovery. Sean B. Caroll is Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Professor of Molecular Biology and Genetics at the University of Wisconsin, USA. Carroll is a leader in the field of evolutionary developmental biology and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2007. He is also the author of Endless Forms Most Beautiful, The Making of the Fittest, and Remarkable Creatures (a finalist for the National Book Award, non-fiction, 2009). riddled with run ons and ambiguity

I'm on my first week of class and this is a bad sign of things to come. I am a studious student - an avid textbook reader. Learning has generally been a meditative, pleasurable act for me. Not so with this book! I should have taken a hint when the instructor told us that the most requested tool from their previous students was a reading guide. It's not that these college upperclassmen can't read, this book is really THAT poorly written. Let me demonstrate:

"Another way of characterizing and tracking a segment of DNA is to use a restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). In Chapter 1, we learned that restriction enzymes are bacterial enzymes that cut DNA at specific base sequences in the genome (really? I don't remember reading about restriction enzymes and I've read chapter 1 twice. Why not just tell me what it is rather than make me feel like an idiot?). The target sequences have no biological significance in organisms other than bacteria; they are present purely by chance (I am not sure what the author is pondering here). Although the target sites are generally found consistently at specific locations, sometimes, on any one chromosome, a specific target site is missing or there is an extra site (wait wait, what happened to restriction fragment length polymorphism? are you going to explain that?). If such a site flanks the sequence hybridized by a probe, then a Southern hybridization (did not talk about "southern hybridization" before, only "southern blot") will reveal an RFLP (what site? the site that could be cut out by restriction enzyme?). Consider this simple (this word makes me feel dumb) example in which one chromosome of one parent contains an extra site not found in the other chromosomes of that type in that cross: [inserting confusing looking diagram here]"

If you understood that, good for you. For me, it's like trying to pitch a tent on a small cliff amidst a thunderstorm while warding off fire ants. I don't recommend it.

Why don't you keep simple writing...

Well like everybody I have read several science books, but this book is written not for students or people that just want to learn out of the book. Maybe is written for people that already know the subject because from the begining of each chapter you hate to continue to the second page.Your curiosity gets shutdown !.Take for example chapter 17 "Large scale Chromosomal Changes" After the first three pages you lost all interest. But wait... I also have Pierce's book "Genetics: a conceptual approach" Third edition (a bargain for 10.00 dollars) and chapter 9 is "Chromosone variation" ( about the same subject)I started reading the first page and I couldn't stop. It is well organized and simple words and excellent explained examples. The school requires switching books every semester beteen those two this fall semester is Griffiths time. I am glad I have Pierce, Brooker and Hartwell books with me to give a hand. I hope the authors evaluate their presentation of the book.

Beware. While it is not mentioned in the product title, nor the product description, and only in 1 or 2 of the sellers' condition notes, you are viewing an international edition. Look closely at the photo (you will have to zoom in). This book has different problem sets than the US edition.

Is there anything less than 1 star?

This is truly an execrable book, and Barron's should be ashamed to have published it. Not only is it poorly written and misleading in some of its conclusions, it is riddled with factual errors. Some of these errors may be blamed on the confusing charts (ex: the chart on page 22 seems to indicate that the Hopi and Navajo lived in New England while the Chinook inhabited Texas and the Pequot, Mohegan, and Naragansett hung out in Florida), while others are relatively minor (ex: page 44, the lawyer in the John Peter Zenger trial was Andrew Hamilton, not Alexander Hamilton).

Other "errors" can be described more accurately as "glaring misunderstandings and lapses of historical fact." My favorite of these occurs on pages 120 and 121, when the author goes on at length about how John Brown's experiences "as a slave" led him to organize the attack on the federal armory at Harper's Ferry. There is a little box with a quote from the memoirs of a Georgia slave named John Brown talking about the harsh conditions of his life before his escape. This is immediately followed by this paragraph:

"John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry proved to be a catlyst for war. He was arrested, tried and hanged. When you look at the diary entry, you will see the agony that Brown went through as a slave. It is not surprising that when he escaped, he decided to lead the attack. You must take this suffering into account in deciding what you would have done if you were John Brown."

Of course, John Brown was not a slave. He was a white abolitionist/violent revolutionary. Amazingly enough, there must have been more than one person named John Brown living in America in the 1850s!

It really is amazing to me that Barron's, which I have generally found to be a reputable company, would let such a book carry the Barron's name into the market. I have the 1999 edition, and it is my fervent hope that there are no subsequent editions. If there are, I hope that someone has gotten around to editing the thing.

The only way I could possibly recommend this book is if it were to a bored history teacher who wanted to exercise his or her red pen a little.

Useful guide, great for an outline, useful for test prep

We have the 2009 version and while I wouldn't even suggest one book could cover all of American history, this one does a nice job of giving you an outline of the basic facts without all the excessive drone of some textbooks --those that go on and on. This book is also worthwhile for most homeschoolers as well as advanced students prepping for an early college exam (CLEP or AP) and would be useful for college kids to use to bone up on just the facts. Is it everything? Of course not, but it does give you an outline to follow and a nicely designed framework to guide you. Common sense in education and learning shows that by using this as a guide, you can easily look for deeper information on the enormous amount of educational websites available--to explore any historical topic. We're using to prep for our son's CLEP exam. It is just one of the tools. Those who complain are quite foolish to think that for $10 you'll get all of American History. If concerned, I'd suggest you check it out from the library first and see which book best fits your learning needs. You can also google any facts that you doubt, but this is a simple, easy to use guide.

Not Very Imformative...

This is another title in the "Real Life Reader Biography" series. These books are quick, short biographies of famous singers, actors, entertainers, and atheletes. I enjoy reading them when I want to learn more about someone, (there are over 100 titles in the series) but these books do not give you much information if you are planning on doing a report or a project about the person. This entry in the series about Christina Aguilera discusses her life up until the release of "Christina Aguilera". It includes many black-and-white photos of Christina and plenty of sidebars. However, this book wasn't very imformative, and it was only 32 pages. Plus, the printing was VERY large. This book doesn't really tell about Christina's life outside of her singing career, and that was one thing that I really wanted to find out in this book. I would recommend this book to younger Christina Aguilera fans or to anyone who hasn't ever read any material about her life before. For those fans who want a longer and more detailed biography of Christina Aguilera, I would recommend you reading the book "Christina Aguilera: A Star is Made", by Pier Dominguez.

Khaled Hroub: Dr Khaled Hroub is a leading expert on Hamas and Islamic movements.
