Destined to Witness: Growing Up Black in Nazi Germany, by Hans J. Massaquoi

A great deal of Holocaust survival stories revolve around disguise--many Jews were forced into impersonation by the desperateness of their plight. Imagine if a person, by the accident of birth, was deigned a target of Nazi hatred but hadn't an option of disguise.

The son of a well-to-do African and a white German nurse, Hans lived a privileged toddler's life befitting the grandson of a diplomat. Concern for Hans's frail health caused his mother to remain with him in Germany when his grandfather and father were compelled to return to Liberia. He and his mother become part of Hamburg's poor working class, forced to live in a cramped attic apartment without hot water and electricity. But their change in social status was to be only the beginning of their hardships.

For twelve agonizing years following Hitler's rise to power, Hans, like all non-Aryans, was dehumanized and devalued by the Nazis. Living in constant fear of death, by either the Gestapo executioners or Allied bombs, Hans's existence became increasingly precarious until liberation by British troops in 1945.

What sets Hans's story apart from other memoirs of the Holocaust era is that his high visibility made him an easily recognizable target, stranded without the comfort of a racial community of any sort. Destined to Witness is a memoir filled with courage, feeling, and intelligence that will touch readers everywhere.A great deal of Holocaust survival stories revolve around disguise--many Jews were forced into impersonation by the desperateness of their plight. From Publishers Weekly
In a unique addition to the literature of life under the Third Reich, Massaquoi, a former managing editor of Ebony magazine, chronicles his life as the son of a German nurse and Al-Haj Massaquoi, the son of the Liberian consul general to Germany. Soon after his birth in Hamburg in 1926, the author's father returned to Liberia to bolster his family's failing stature in national politics, leaving his wife and son to grapple with everyday life amid the rise of fascism in Germany. The Reich's racial politics were so steadfastly drummed into German schoolchildren that the young Hans quickly acquired an anti-Semitic outlook only to realize that he was also subject to discrimination as a non-Aryan. He sought intellectual escape from German nationalism through reading books by Jules Verne, Arthur Conan Doyle and James Fenimore Cooper; in his idealization of African-American athletes Joe Lewis and Jesse Owens; and by learning how to play jazz and his involvement with the "swingboys" officially condemned as purveyors of "degenerate" music and dance. Massaquoi and his mother survived both Nazi rule and the devastating 1943 British bombing of Hamburg. He tells of life after the war, of befriending black American soldiers, of moving to Liberia in 1948 and of his subsequent move to America in 1950, where he came to feel that racism was as prevalent as it had been under the Third Reich. Thoughtful and well written, Massaquoi's memoir adds nuance to our comprehension of 20th-century political and personal experience.

From Library Journal
Massaquoi, the retired managing editor of Ebony, presents an unusual perspective on the Nazi era. The son of an "Aryan" mother and an African diplomat, he grew up in Germany on the wrong side of Nazi racial ideology, confronting not only the bigotry of his countrymen but the danger of Allied bombs on a nearly daily basis. Even after his postwar immigration to the United States and service with the U.S. Army in Korea, the author sees his life as one of witness to racial inequality. His journey from Nazi Germany to the post-Civil Rights United States makes for interesting reading, recounted with an eye for detail and a humanity that is appealing. Although there were many individuals like Massaquoi, few took the path he did, and probably few could write about it with such force. From Booklist
Massaquoi, a man of mixed racial heritage, survived 12 years of Nazi terror in Germany during World War II. The son of a German mother and a Liberian father, he grew up in a country that became progressively obsessed with racial purity, where Massaquoi was unable to escape racist taunts and hostilities. He recalls his early, naive acceptance and even admiration of Hitler, even in the face of creeping racial animosities, primarly aimed at Jews but slowly encompassing other non-Aryan people as well. By adolescence, embittered by his perpetual outsider status, Massaquoi had come to grips with the reality of his situation and that of his mother. Through sports figures Joe Louis and Jesse Owens, Massaquoi attached his racial identity to that of black Americans and became obsessed with coming to the U.S. After the war, he settled temporarily in Liberia with his father's family before journeying to the U.S. and eventually becoming a reporter with Ebony magazine. Massaquoi's background and experiences provide incredible context to this personal story of overcoming racism. Vanessa Bush

He was also denied people who looked like him. This was his new life
By Duchess
Destined to Witness: Growing Up Black in Nazi Germany was, indeed, an interesting book. Interesting is the operative word here. Yes, one can say the title was rather misleading. In fact 50 pages in, I thought the very same thing. Nazi Germany was filled with gore and blood, and horrific acts beyond imagination-but, there was none of that. However, after reading the entire book and reflecting on it, I can say that this book was titled correctly. The 20 plus years hans Mssaquoi spent literally growing up in Germany, informed all that he became.

Here was a little boy who, at an early age, was forced to digest the poisonous matter of a hatful new nationalism in Germany. His father and grandfather were thrown out of Germany, and Hans out of a young childhood where he was surrounded by luxury. He was also denied people who looked like him. This was his new life. His mother did not really talk about it, probably because of the guilt she felt in retrospect. For years, he was rather in a state of constipation--the inability to purge his body of a constant stream of poison. Because he was so young, he just didn't have the words, and when he did, there was no one like him to tell them. And so he focuses on people and incidents. For most of his growing up, there is a sense of duality. He knows he is different but tries hard to fit in. He is a 2 eyd person in a society awards people with 3 eyes. I

In Germany after the war, he realizes that his difference can be used to some advantage; however, he also knows that he needs to truly define himself among the 2 eyed people. This he accomplishes, at least in part, by going to Liberia. Thus, a young man who never felt at home in Germany or Liberia decides to remake himself in America. Mature enough to better process all which has happened, he feels a new sense of freedom-something he never before felt.

I found this book a difficult read, but then how much more difficult was it for Hans Massaquoi to write?

Unique perspective
By C. R. Greyraven
This memoir grabbed my attention in a way that usually only a novel would. The author tells a very personal story of himself as a child in a difficult family situation that interweaves with and parallels an entire society's upheaval. A black Liberian father (son of an ambassador) and a white German mother (working class) start the story in post WWI Germany. The author weaves evocative detail into this tale of a dark-skinned child growing up in Hamburg with a single mother who battles to protect her son from discrimination as Hitler rises to power. The author speaks with both human or pathos as he describes his teenage years in a nation going to war for Aryan supremacy. He brings to life the horror of the bombing of Hamburg and the brutal struggle for food and shelter that he shared with many Germans in post-war Germany. His adventures and misadventures with American servicemen in Germany and then with his Liberian family in Africa bring another layer into sociological insights offered to the reader. The story wraps up in the USA, pulling the threads of historical trends into more recent decades. A well-told tale from a unique perspective. Highly recommended.

An amazing life story
By Wanda Phillips
A very lucky man takes us out onto the knife's edge of his life. His smart, well-grounded mother provides the security needed for a mixed race child to survive Nazi Germany. Those of us for whom the second world war is history can benefit from this man's journey through the rise of Nazi Germany, the war years, and the contrast of life in Liberia, then America. Luck and his sensible mother give him an insider/outsider view; here is a man who could have been crushed into self-loathing or killed by racists at several points in his life, but he keeps his head, he makes a wonderful life for himself, and he proves all the weird bigotry wrong, again and again.
A well-written memoir. The author applies his journalist's training on his life to provide an insightful examination of the Nazi regime. He presents his life and it becomes clear that regardless of the hate propagated in the culture, he comes out a rather strong, flexible, and cheerful man. He looks at the inverted racism and corruption of Liberia without the embarrassment or shame that some would project. He remains convinced that America is the true land of the free, except in the southern states. Even when that idyllic vision is wiped away by the casual bigotry of some of the Americans he meets, he loves America for its high aims. He celebrates the potential that America represents for him.
In truth, it is his large family that gives him the glow that shines through his entire story. In the darkest days he and his mother find a way to live with dignity.

Prelude to Terror: the Rogue CIA, The Legacy of America's Private Intelligence Network the Compromising of American

After decades of writing and research about American intelligence, Joseph Trento has written the most authoritative indictment of CIA splinter groups, two generations of Bush family involvement in illegal financial networks, and the funding of the agents of terror. Prelude to Terror reveals the history of a corrupt group of spymasters—led by Ted Shackley—who were fired when Jimmy Carter became president, but who maintained their intelligence portfolio and used it to create a private intelligence network. After this rogue group helped engineer Carter’s defeat in 1980 and allied with George H.W. Bush, these former CIA men planned and conducted what became the Iran–Contra scandal and, through the Saudis, allied the U.S. with extreme elements in Islam. The CIA’s number-one front man, Edwin P. Wilson, was framed by Shackley and his cohorts so that Wilson’s operations could be taken over. For the first time the story of how CIA director George H. W. Bush was recruited into this network, and brought it into the bosom of the Saudi royal family, is told in detail, as well as how this group’s manipulation of the CIA bureaucracy allowed Osama bin Laden’s fundraising to thrive as al Qaeda flourished under Saudi and CIA protection.

Indispensable
By Marion Delgado
First and foremost, I think the POV is the CIA's "intelligence" wing(s) vs. the "Ops" goons, a longstanding civil war in the CIA and the other clandestine services where Trento, who has covered intelligence for 35 years, clearly sources to the inteligence side of the battle.

Those of us following scandals from Nixon's treason in 1968 as a private citizen who sabotaged Vietnam War peace negotiations, through Watergate, through Bush I's treason in Iran as a private citizen negotiating the continued retention of American Hostages, through Iran/Contra, through Bush II's treason as a private citizen interfering in Mideast peace negotiations, noticed the same small cabal involved in everything - Ted Shackley, Thomas Clines, John Poindexter, Richard Secord, John Singlaub, George Herbert Walker Bush, James Angleton, Chi Chi Quinterez, Ed Wilson - and at various times, people like Oliver North and even Zbiegniew Brzezhinski operating on their behalf on a regular basis. Two of these, Angleton and Clines, were interviewed by Trento.

This book goes back to the days of Dulles and ahead to the present and shows how the CIA's old boy network can always bite back harder than it's bitten. It deals peripherally with things like BCCI and Nugan/Hand. It's much more critical of Stansfield Turner, whom I have met on a couple of occasions, than I would be, but it nicely fills in the back story on his period as director of the CIA.

This book has nothing about Adnan Kashoggi but does talk about Sarkis Soghnalian, a Turkish/Armenian power broker. I think one of the weak links for the rogue operative network is in fact the information held by their non-American allies. It's possible the US or Israel will attack Iran, and if so, people should be educated enough to understand any revelations the Iranians might have for us in retaliation.

Some Inconsistencies, But Best Synthesis of Bush-Mafia-Dictator-Privatized Intelligence Network
By Robert David STEELE Vivas
This is not a perfect book. It has inconsistencies and errors but this book has helped connect many dots from the other 690+ books I have reviewed.

I had no idea while I was at CIA as a clandestine officer that there are really multiple CIA's and that there are three *external* CIAS: the "Safari Club" led by Saudi Arabia, with France, Egypt, Morocco and Iran (during the Shah's time, not since); the murder network (South Africa, Israel, South Korea, and probably also Chile and Argentina during their worst years); and a privatized CIA running drugs and arms, laundering money, and generally doing things that were "off the books and out of control" as the author titles one of his chapters.

According to the author, Allen Dulles has the first private intelligence service at 44 Wall Street, relying heavily on the recruitment of former Nazis. There is a direct path from the CIA's fascination with former Nazis to the presence of Karl Rove in the White House.

The author draws on good sources to document the long-time relationship between Wall Street and certain companies such as the house of Morgan and Brown that leads us right up to when Buzzy Kronguard, formerly of Alex Brown, was executive director of the CIA at no salary. Prescott Bush, farther of the first President Bush, features heavily in the corrupt relations between CIA and the Wall Street mafia. These people financed the Nazis and weapons that killed Americans.

Interestingly, the Dutch are known to have all the details on the Bush family ties to the Nazis, and I have personally heard from the Dutch that they also have full details from the Chinese on drunken teen-ager George W. Bush, of whom photos are said to exist while he is incoherent and perhaps posed in naked compromising positions with his male Chinese tennis teacher). All of this is inevitably going to be in the public consciousness--right now it falls into what one author calls "Fog Facts"--known openly but not "computed" by the public.

This entire book is a tale of the corruption of intelligence, caused in part by the abysmal failure of US intelligence in the early years, ranging from failing to predict the Korean invasion to trying to assassinate Chinese premier Chou En Lai.

The Viet-Nam era empowered people like Ted Shackley (who died in 2002 and whose memoirs are coming out shortly). CIA learned to run drugs and arms, launder money, start its own banks, and generally avoid Congressional funding limitations and Congressional oversight. Unfortunately, creating a rogue CIA further incapacitated "CIA proper" of which I was a part, and the author reasonably points out that the fall of the Shah of Iran, the failure to understand the 1975 concerns about Shiite terrorism training camps, the assassination of Sadat, the CIA coup plans that were pre-empted by Qadafi, the growth of Al Qaeda, the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban (which deprived Wall Street of its drug crops, now restored courtesy of the U.S. Army)--the list goes on.

According to the author's sources, the CIA opened the Far East to the US mafia, and helped develop pipelines for the drugs that included piggy-backing on US servicemen corpses coming back into Dover AFP. Fast forward to CIA using Special Operations Forces to protect transmitters that allowed hundreds of drug airplanes to land in Panama where drugs could be traded for money and arms.

The author centers the book on Ted Shackley as a bridge figure among many "external" intelligence activities, but Clark Clifford is also key in the founding of the BCCI bank and in asking the Saudis directly to fund an alternative CIA to be known as the Safari Club. BCCI had overtly good intentions--to attract terrorist and criminal funds, but at root it represented the complete "sale" of US intelligence to the Saudis.

The politicization of intelligence is the other major theme in this book, and the Bush family features very prominently.

Side notes:

Ted Shackley recruited Zbigniew Brzezinski as a young Polish-American student, and had full access to him later when he was National Security Advisor.

Don Rumsfeld, today Secretary of Defense, was instrumental in persuading President Ford not to appoint Eliot Richardson, a reformer of known integrity, to the DCI position, and instead got Kissinger to invite Bush from Beijing, all to ensure that Kissinger's role in subverting Chile would be concealed.

As DCI, Turner shut the Israeli's out, essentially forcing them to adopt Shackley as their "black CIA" partner, and then Bush as DCI turned CIA over to the Saudi government.

Shackley fought Inman for the soul of CIA, and the evidence suggests that Shackley won, in part by blackmailing Inman in collaboration with the Israel lobby.

CIA placed officers under cover on the Hill, notably in Senator Dan Quayle's office.

The book left me with three thoughts for reflection:

1) 9-11 was the culmination of decades of CIA corruption and politicization. Of course there are other factors, but from 1975 forward CIA "sold out" and it can be safely said that Viet-Nam killed CIA and opened the doors to the privatization of dirty tricks, murders, and generally very bad out of control covert foreign policy and a consequent subversion of national security.

2) Cheap oil resulting from our support of ruthless dictators set the stage for the radicalization of the Muslim world against America. People are not stupid--they see the link between the US situation, US support for dictators, and their own suffering and exclusion from the wealth.

3) One day, someday, I am going to fund an ABLE DANGER analysis of the history of secret intelligence, starting with Richard Secord, who is in charge of GRAY FOX (the successor to YELLOW FRUIT) and who is not killing terrorists, which is what he is supposed to be doing, but instead continuing the for-profit external CIA, and Ted Shackley.

This is an important book.

GEORGE H.W. BUSH: PRIME SUSPECT IN THE CASE OF 9/11
By Cheri Montagu
There is one overwhelming problem with Joseph J. Trento's PRELUDE TO TERROR. After a number of fascinating chapters showing how the CIA has become an increasingly criminal institution, he stops short of drawing the obvious conclusion. In his final chapter he says that today's CIA has become "at best irrelevant and at worst a joke." Try telling that to the poor wretches it is torturing in prisons all over the world! In fact the CIA has had the most profound influence upon American political life, corrupting our entire government to the point where it is by now beyond hope of reform.

Trento's focus upon George H.W. Bush is appropriate, for no one has had a greater influence on this process. The Bush presidency-- the first ever in which a former Director of the CIA held that office-- represents the "Rubicon moment" in American history, when the road to totalitarianism which is now reaching its climax was set in a manner which made it impossible to turn back. Bush moved quickly to end a Cold War which was becoming useless to the American intelligence elite, and initiate a confrontation with the Muslim Middle East. Yes, initiate, for it is abundantly clear that Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait was no surprise to the Bush Administration but rather a set-up. After all, the Iraqi dictator had gone to Bush's ambassador to Iraq to sound her out on the possible reaction of the United States to such an invasion, and she had given him a green light. Saddam's response could not have been better suited to the interests of a military-industrial complex which was trembling at the prospect of peace breaking out.

Most telling of all was something I heard a policy analyst say on what was then the MacNeil Lehrer News Hour: He said that Aemricans should expect terrorist attacks on their own soil. This scared the hell out of me, not because I thought that there was any prospect of such attacks occurring, but because I knew then that the Big Lie was being born, and that its purpose could only be to deprive us of our civil liberties. The first war against Iraq ended without any such incidents, but then, it takes a long time to get such things rolling, and maybe Bush was having a hard time convincing his friend Osama bin Laden to take the rap. Besides, he had a son who was very likely to run for president in his turn. What better legacy to pass on to him than 9/11?

It is time for Americans to realize that they are being manipulated. Trento's title, "Prelude to Terror" is a good one, but the terror about to be unleashed on our society is the product of our own government.

Review
I can recommend this book as a good way to learn and review sed. It completely covers GNU sed, with many examples. I hope that this book is well received. The effort put in by the author, and the high quality of the result, surely deserve that.
Paolo Bonzini - GNU sed Maintainer

"Definitive Guide to sed" seems like a great way to learn sed. It's a reference / tutorial that's straightforward and to the point. The book has clear descriptions of every sed feature. It's systematic and organized, and written in a flowing style that takes most of the pain out of learning a somewhat complex topic. "Definitive Guide to sed" is highly recommended.
Mendel Cooper - author of 'The Advanced Bash Scripting Guide'

Why bother with sed?
By Anthony Lawrence
That's the first question that popped into my head when I saw this book.

Here's the funny thing, though: I DO use sed. Maybe not every day, but I doubt a week goes by that I don't use sed for something.

I don't use sed for anything complicated; for that I'd turn to Perl. I'd say that's a concept the author agrees with (though some of the examples in this book would cause me to start editing a Perl script instantly).

Let's get the praise out of the way first: this is the clearest and easiest to understand treatment of sed I have ever read. I can well remember my initial befuddlement from the sed "man" page thirty years ago and not feeling all that much more enlightened by O'Reilly's "Sed & Awk" quite a few years later. This book would have served me better.

But instead I learned Perl. Yet, because I knew how to do the simpler tasks in sed, those stuck with me. Perl can do the same sort of simple command line things, but I never learned that sytax because I had sed! I have to wonder: had I become more proficient with sed and awk, would I have taken up Perl so early?

I'm not sure that I can answer that question. I have an opinion that it's better to know all of it - sed, awk, Perl, vi, emacs, whatever: you never know what you might need to do and under what conditions you need to do it. I've been on systems where Perl was not installed or was broken; it was certainly helpful to have fall-back tools - clumsy as my scripts were, they did the job.

So - very well done. I'm not sure how many people will bother with it, but those that do will get their money's worth.

An excellent introduction to sed
By Matthew
This text provides an excellent coverage of GNU sed. I'd also recommend O'Reilly's sed&awk, but whereas that one focuses on POSIX sed, this text covers the GNU version, which is what most people are going to be using. GNU introduces a few new options and instructions that are not in POSIX and this book discusses those as well. Simple examples are provided for every concept discussed.

Best sed reference I've seen
By Mike
Learning sed has always been a frustrating task, and I think that has been at least partially due to the lack of good references on the subject out there. Well, this book book seems to have solved that problem.

The author does a great job in covering all aspects of sed, and lays out the book in a well organized way. The best part of the book however is all of the examples the author uses. The author doesn't simply tell you how to use sed. He shows you, using numerous examples every step of the way. As someone who learns best by doing, this book had me using some of sed's advanced features in no time.

I'd recommend this book to anyone looking to learn sed, from experienced sed users who want to master its advanced features to people who have never used the tool before.

Cutting The Bars: A hard place for hard men, by Peter Egge

I joined the New South Wales Department of Corrective Services on 10th May 1971 as a Probationary Prison Officer. During my training school I was told many times that I would be advised to leave work at work and never go home or to the pub and talk about Gaols. What happens behind the walls was to stay behind the walls.

It was not until after my service came to an end, did I come to realise that the type of secrecy that had been embedded into my brain was very wrong on many levels. My wife and family, my parents, my siblings and extended families, as well as my friends would watch in horror at the news headlines knowing I was there, yet rarely spoke about it. Headlines such as “Gaol Riots”, “Death in Custody”, “Prison Officer Bashed” and “Prison Officer Taken Hostage”, just to give a small example of occurrences that happened were common place, as I worked my way through the ranks, ultimately reaching the high and distinguished rank of Senior Assistant Superintendent, a Commissioned Officer.

There was never a signing of any secrecy act or some kind of formal agreement, it was, simply put, the recommended thinking of the era. It was the way Gaols were run in those days. They were harsh, disciplined places to be in, regardless of which side of the bars you were on. I can see now that the old secrecy behind the wall achieved nothing for either the prisoners or the Prison Officers than to protect the wrong doers and inflame political groups and agitators such as the “Prisoner’s Action Group”.

Thus very few books have been written about New South Wales prisons by Prison Officers, whether it is because of some misguided loyalty to the unofficial code of silence, or for some other reason I’m not entirely certain. With few exceptions, there is a huge void in literature revealing the history of the prison system during the time I worked in the New South Wales system in the 1970’s and 1980’s, written by the people who were actually there, namely Prison Officers.

My first book “ITS ALL IN THE FALL” was about my personal experiences in which I was directly involved or was sitting on the peripheral edge of every event depicted in the book. I have an abundance of factual stories to tell you in this book that occurred in which I was personally involved during my time working in the Prison system and I will also be telling factual stories that happened during that time that had nothing to do with me. My aim is to open up the New South Wales Prison System to the public and show the reader what it was really like behind the secret walls of the Gaol that I loved to work in. This is why I have given my book the emblematic name of “Cutting the Bars”. I invite you to sit back and enjoy this factual and fascinating read as we explore the New South Wales Prison System in the period during the 1970’s and 1980’s

Citizens of Heaven--Residents of Earth, by Lindsey Garmon

"Our citizenship is in heaven."-- Philippians 3:20 Have we lost our deep love and longing for the homeland of heaven? Do we need to refocus on our primary citizenship? Have we driven our stakes too deeply in earthly soil and become comfortable and cozy as earth dwellers? Even though we are living as temporary residents of earth, our primary citizenship is in heaven. This biblical concept is a mind stretcher-even a life changer-for any disciple who dares to take it seriously. It will challenge believers who may have never understood their true identity as resident-aliens on earth. Living in this world as foreigners is a common theme in both the Old and New Testaments. Thus, the Bible becomes our "Immigration Manual," informing us about the few years we spend as heavenly citizens in this earthly realm. During our pilgrimage in a foreign land, we must battle the temptation to settle down and fully integrate into the host society. No matter how many years we reside here, deep down inside, it never quite feels like home. Only when we finally enter the homeland of heaven will we really be able to say, "Ah, home at last!" Born in Nashville, Tennessee, Lindsey Garmon holds degrees from David Lipscomb University (B.A.), Harding Graduate School of Religion (M.A.), and Austin Presbyterian Seminary (Doctor of Ministry). He has served as a staff teacher in a local church setting for many years, sharing the Word of God with adults who are eager to learn and grow spiritually. He and his wife, Sherrie, currently reside in Portland, Texas, and attend North Bay Church of Christ.
