Good choice!

I am a pediatric nurse, RN working in a busy outpatient department. I am also a Pediatric instructor at City College of San Francisco. I found this book to be a great and quick reference. The book is divided into sections by systems which I find to be helpful. The pictures are great and they have boxes that will highlight key points and pediatric pearls; which highlight key physical findings and techniques to improve pediatric exams. I like that the book is spiral bound. It makes it easy to read as it lies flat on a table or you could fold it back. I've used the photo's to show a new mother the anatomy of the skull of the newborn. She had questions about her baby's fontanels. I would highly recommend this book! DMG RN MSN IBCLC

The best pediatric physical exam textbook you will find

I am in my second year of a MSN-FNP program ready to begin my pediatric clinicals. After reading these reviews I knew I needed to purchase this book; I am very happy that I did. This is far and away the BEST book you will find on pediatric physical examinations out there. It is so thorough!

It is full of color photographs and drawings showing procedural steps and physical images in detail (very helpful so you may be more comfortable with a procedure or anomaly before you are approached with one in front of your preceptor).

Things like normal variations and abnormal findings are all given in tables so they are easy to find. Charting tips are offered for every section. I especially like how well the musculoskeletal and neurological sections are covered as these assessments have many specific examinations (each are offered, again with pictures). For example, the examination of the newborn hip is shown with pictures - observing for Ortolani's sign, Barlow's test, and symmetry (all shown with detailed pictures). Each body section is really covered well, it is difficult to pick out one or two. I suggest you click on the "look inside" to skip around the book for a few moments before you purchase it. I'm sure you will find it covers every area in detail. Just peek at the pictures in the skin section.

I just cannot get over how fantastic this book is. The size is perfect, you can carry it with you to clinicals (not too heavy and not too big) 6" x 9" and about 1" thick and spiral bound so it stays open to where you want it. It also has the fold over tab on the back cover so it has the built-in bookmark (a bonus!).

I highly recommend this to anyone who works with pediatric patients. Truly a fabulous find. I don't know why my school doesn't require this book. It is far better than the textbooks they do require.

A book for those starting to think about design in test code

Like most Selenium/Webdriver books, the first chapter introduces the Selenium IDE and Selenese which seems inappropriate base on the book's title, having the expectation that design patterns and the latest best practices would be first and foremost. Further, leaving the impression the book is another, "how to" and "some good concepts" when working with Selenium.

The authors introduce a number of patterns and concepts, relating to the overall design of the test framework. Though, a number of "patterns" described by the authors are more of programming concepts, principles, or rules, such as "DRY".

The portion over page objects provides a great overall understanding of the pattern and why it is widely adopted by a large number of test developers. However, since the code examples are in Ruby, Page Factories (Java) is not mention. Again, the expectation, would take the page object pattern to the next level and introduce new levels of abstraction.

"Test your tests" section provides a couple of great concepts on stabilization.

Overall, minus the first chapter, the book starts the conversation of software patterns and principles, and that being the same as production application development. Though the book covers more "what not to do" then provide real solutions using proper design and coding. In addition, the book lacks a couple concepts, that "tests should be easy to read", the framework code should provide the intent and is self documenting, by using good naming conventions.

Nevertheless, the book would help those less experienced in development to start looking for better designs within his/her code and thinking about long term and downstream aspects.

It could be better...

I too started to read the book as others state, but quickly realized it was not for me. Let me clarify: if I was starting out with Selenium (in some form) I would smartly elect to move directly into the form currently supported AND for test code development: Selenium WebDriver. Selenium IDE has its own script language that is not the same as Selenium WebDriver. And Selenium Remote Control (RC) has been deprecated for quite a while. Selenium IDE produces 'brittle' output that makes it fairly disposable. So to talk about other forms of Selenium than WebDriver was not all what I was looking for.

My thoughts about the first 1/3 of the book are below:

- Talks about using irb (Interactive Ruby Shell) for debugging and lauds its utility. You'll need to take that with a grain of salt. Every IDE's debug mode has its strengths and weaknesses.

- I wish (in general) that authors would get straight to the point of suggesting a good/great pattern - and say why it is so good. This likely can be summed up succinctly instead of rambling through a handful that are bad patterns (with examples) chewing up the reader's time. Remember the phrase "Life is short"?

- There is a term for his verbose phrase of "no random order". Dependency.

- Usually test logs of test steps are generated to help track down issues. Additionally wrappers are often coded around object identifiers and associated methods to also help debugging issues. Screenshots anyone?

- The campy sample website: awful-valentine.com? puh-lease. Huge 'picture plate' objectives that could have been easily summarized in simple text one-liners.

- The author talks about the 'Big Ball of Mud' design pattern:
"Adoption of this pattern is usually unintentional and stems from being developed over long periods of time with different individuals working on different pieces without any overall architectural plan." p.62

Whereas the authors of the paper he refers to state:
"There are good reasons that good programmers build BIG BALLS OF MUD. It may well be that the economics of the software world are such that the market moves so fast that long term architectural ambitions are foolhardy, and that expedient, slash-and-burn, disposable programming is, in fact, a state-of-the-art strategy. The success of these approaches, in any case, is undeniable, and seals their pattern-hood.People build BIG BALLS OF MUD because they work. In many domains, they are the only things that have been shown to work. - The author quotes (w/o references):
"As Donald Knuth so eloquently stated, "Premature optimization is the root of all evil (or at least most of it) in programming."

Although one can argue that duplicate code, test goals, and such was what Knuth was speaking about, if one looks at his paper from where the quote comes, it is more in the context of performance algorithm-wise. The paper can be found here and the quote is found on p.268 :

So, from this you can see I have issues regarding various 'detail's, the use of Ruby when Java has the market share, spending a large amount of the book's volume on stuff that does not get to the main point of the book supposedly (see book title). Much of the design practices he speaks can be used with any test tool - not just Selenium. Simply the best sport riding book available! As a riding coach/instructor I see allot of new riders. One of the first things I do is recommend this book. Those that read it perform signifigantly better than those that don't. While some may not understand the physics of riding, this book does a phenominal job of explaining it in a manner most can comprehend. Geared towards the track many might think it;s not for them. It 'over prepared' me for the riding course I took and when the intructor congratulated me for my perfect score I mentioned 'Twist of The Wrist'. This review is from: A Twist of the Wrist 2: The Basics of High-Performance Motorcycle Riding (Paperback) This book will teach you how to ride like Doohan instead of riding like a squid (eg fast and smooth instead of point and shoot). "A twist of the wrist 2" will teach you how to ride faster, smoother, safer, it could save your life and will teach you more about motorcycle riding technique than you thought you could ever know. This guy (Keith Code) taught Doug Chandler how to go faster. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. This volume teaches you cornering technique that applies to any situation. The main chapter headings are "throttle control", "rider input", "steering", "vision", "braking", "traction" and "racing". You will learn that smoothness equals speed and safety. Using the techniques taught by Keith you will find even a bike like my Yamaha Virago 1100 is a pretty quick bike through corners as long as you set up a smooth entry into the corner, then power through and blast o! ut the other side. I've blown away squids on GSXR750s and 1100s using this riding style, mainly because I can now carry a higher cornering speed. Keith teaches you that braking hard into a corner just upsets the suspension and maked the bike pogo all th way through. About the Author
Keith started riding in the dark ages of motorcycling, the 1950's. He first raced in the 60's at age 16, again in the 70's, 80's and 90's. He went to design school; was a photographer; designed and manufactured shoes for the stars; sold pretzels on the street; was a full on drug addict in the 60's; cleaned up with Dianetics; became a writer, inventor and dedicated himself to understanding and teaching the art of riding motorcycles. He was the first person to put words to roadracing and riding, and his research continues today. Keith lives in Glendale, California with his soul mate of 40 years, Judy. He has one son, Dylan.

Helped me survive some scary occurences

I don't know about everyone else, but when I read a book I learn from it. There is a lot to learn in this book. I am glad a I read it a few times already because I think what learned from it saved my skin the other day when I hit a large hole in a country road going about sixty or seventy in pretty good lean on a right hander. I think my forks bottomed out because they made this ugly noise and the bike started bucking like a horse ( I don't have steering damper ). I did what the book suggested in this instance: I didn't get scared ( until later ), I relaxed, I got out of the saddle, balanced on the pegs, and gassed it. Result: bike stayed up and I didn't eat it. Keith will tell you to trust your bike and let it do its thing, he says riders and their fears are the reason bikes go down and all you have to do is learn to be a good rider and let the bike do what it is designed to do. Excellent advice. This book might save your butt. BUY IT AND READ IT OVER AND OVER.

Corner fast, smile and say Damn! I did that well.

Keith Code and David Hough ("Proficient Motorcycling") have helped to demystify motorcycle behavior in turns. The concept of countersteering seems strange till you watch a bike coming directly at you and the wheel suddenly, (but temporarily) turns in the opposite direction of the subsequent turn. I've been a street rider (always having a fast/modified bike) since the late 60s and even with much experience, never realized how sloppy my riding really was. Mr. Code (in Twist II) points out that transferring the technical concepts to actual riding goes against many survival instincts. This is much like learning to ski where leaning downhill in turns is crucial to control when every instinct screams at you to do the opposite.

One of many concepts presented is "pivot steering by using outside peg pressure." The mechanics and application of this are well presented by Mr. Code, and I'll tell you the best part. It increased my confidence and average speed through fast corners by 10 mph! After some practice, this feels so right, it brings a smile to your face like any physical action in sport that you've performed well and gracefully. Lots of good stuff like this in twist II. You may think you can take turns pretty fast, and maybe you can but apply these concepts and you'll go faster and smoother.

An excellent book. I have been riding for 30 years but this book helped me improve my riding skills. I very much like that not only does it inform you of how you should be riding, but also why you should ride like that. By that I mean it explains what happens with the bike from various rider input.

GREAT reference guide to world music

These Rough Guide volumes are the only truly comprehensive World Music Guides I have seen - full of specific lists of album and song titles to go in search of. While I don't always agree with the writers' taste or recommended recordings, there is no doubt that these World Music volumes are an invaluable reference in the field. Music lovers unfamiliar with world music will feel that the have suddenly happened upon a treasure chest of gold that opens up a whole new world... These volumes serve as an excellent discovery guide for approaching and buying the music of less commercial regions of the globe - however, for this reason, some recordings are not available on Amazon. Readers in large cities may have easier access to recordings via their public library or musicians passing through in concert. Depending on the artist, Youtube can sometimes be of help. As I love African music, this was my favorite volume of all. Enjoy!

Bigger and better!

The Rough Guides--the CDs and the books--offer spectacular resources for anyone interested in international music. This is the first volume in a projected 3-volume set that will replace the current two-volume edition. The material on Africa and the Middle East present about 50% more material than before, and include suggested "playlists" in addition to the biographical and discographical information included in the previous edition. As a radio programmer I find the Rough Guides quite useful.

Will change how you see some/all people - Crazy accurate

While it is a therapy manual, I found it to be by far, the best book on the subject as I was able to understand, and agree with most everything in it as I interact with several people that perfectly exhibit such patterns. And while most common theories mash a bunch of random ideas together, this really ties it altogether into a clear and neat little package that makes a ton more sense.

In terms of understanding other people, it really helps to see them in a much higher, compassionate viewpoint, and prevents burnout, which is so common a problem. Heck, it even shows that subjectivity over objectivity is extremely valuable.

While it is written to help those that do not necessarily fit neatly into society perfectly, it actually helps to really recognize and eliminate life traps in a much bigger population (e.g. you), and perhaps most importantly, to see peoples problems as a strong need/call for help--and not malicious, selfish, manipulative actions.

Lots of people are unnecessarily suffering from various social disorders (e.g. BPD, EDD, and CPSTD), and I am surprised more professionals have not heard of this theoretical approach as it makes much more intuitive and structural sense, and besides, a handful of studies show its the best treatment method by far, esp in a group setting.

I really hope this goes viral in the health community and its main ideas reach mainstream public.

If you're interested in CBT and tend to focus on reframing negative self talk, this is an excellent book for you. The discussion outlines several maladaptive schemas in great detail to help with conceptualization and treatment panning.

This book is like getting a masters degree in a little over 400 pages. It's really worth it. It goes step by step explaining the theory and all the estrategies to use in this therapy. It is one of the most useful books in therapy I've read.

Timeless...for ages 9 and up

"The Bible Smuggler" is a biography about William Tyndale and his work translating the Bible from Latin to English. It is written for ages 9 and up. The story is told from the perspective of Tyndale’s young assistant, Colin and carries the reader emotionally as the young boy grows in his respect and admiration for Tyndale. Although the reader may already know the outcome of William Tyndale’s story, it can still has a powerful impact. (When I finished the book there were a few tears in my eyes). Ours is a better world for people such as William Tyndale.
One of the many reasons I think "The Bible Smuggler" is a great read is that while it was written in the late 1960's, it remains relevant. People still fear what they don’t know, dislike and even fear change (for the most part), those who are in control like to maintain control and more importantly, we never know how long we will continue to have the freedoms we have today.

I bought for my son but I loved it!!

This was a great book that I learned a lot from. I bought this book for my son and thought I would take a look at it before he read it - just to make sure it was appropriate for his age etc. It [...]me in and a few hours later I was done with it. Of course that perked up his interest and he wants to read it. A good book that even keeps an adult interested. I would and will highly reccommend to others.
