Cute but not a lot of new ideas
By Trixie5585
Cute book, not really anything absolutely new with the exception of the cute deer quilt square. I am sorry to say I won't be making but two projects out of this book. I agree with another reviewer that it does not list the finished size of any of the finished projects. If I had a chance to see the book and known that prior, I would not have purchased it.

No immediate sizes of item being described... ...
By America the Beautiful...no apologies
No immediate sizes of item being described...you have to look within the pattern to find the info and figure it out on your own. First book I have found this way. So what is the big mystery to be as to the size of each item being made? I have no idea as that is a very frustrating component for me when it is not noted upfront.

Satanism: A Beginner's Guide to the Religious Worship of Satan and Demons Volume I: Philosophy, by Brother Nero

In this, the first book in a new series on Traditional Satanism, Brother Nero, an outspoken advocate of the Devil and His ways for over 20 years, focuses on an area of Satanism that few other authors have discussed in detail: the day to day philosophy and lifestyles of those who sincerely worship the Devil. Many topics usually considered too controversial for print in a book such as this are dealt with in a straightforward, easy to understand manner. Some of the many subjects covered in this book are: * Raising children in Satanism * Satanic marriage and sexual relationships * The nature of Satan and Demons * Holy Texts of Traditional Satanism * Al-Jilwah commentary * Daily prayer * Solitary practice vs. joining a Coven This book is a series of essays meant to educate those outside of Satanism about the true nature of the people who practice it, as well as to provide a source of inspiration and spiritual guidance to the Satanic community.

Brow-beating at its best!
By Myriad
I was highly anticipating the reading of this book by Brother Nero as a treat to the traditional standards and practices of Satanism. What I received was a lesson in brow beating. While Brother Nero is adamant that modern Satanists take Satanism so seriously as to form relationships with the Dark Father and his minions, he also pontificates that he is perpetually neglected, persecuted, other Satanists are lacking in true Satanic Faith, wishes to annihilate God via worship attrition, all Satanists are egotistical, wondering why all other people don't question themselves whether they are right or wrong yet in the same token believing all the while he is always right, "And I'm going to preach what I believe is the truth."

Reading between the lines however, some light does shine through on his particular brand of Satanism that stands out amongst other Satanic practices. While LaVeyan and Ford practices are symbolic and anthropocentric affording that no one bows before anyone or anything else in reverence, Brother Nero advocates the physical practice of worshiping Satan as the sole deity and seeing Him as the Greater power than our own which leads one to believe that Brother Nero advocates humility indicative of traditional Christian/Judaic/Islamic traditions. He believes that Satan and his demons are flesh and blood and should be respected as one would respect oneself and in doing, the same will be returned (The Law of Return -reciprocation-) indicative of the Golden Rule (do unto others as you would have them do unto you). His anthropomorphic views on Satan, the demons and yes even God -who is also egotistical and narcissistic- lead one to see into the mind of our Satanic Brother Nero.

All-in-all, only having read just a portion of Brother Nero's work, which is partly a lesson in humility in itself and an eye-opener to alternative possibilities on the worship of the Demonic forces that permeate our everyday lives, leaves me to believe that Brother Nero, while still immature in conversation and argument, has the greatest potential to become an astute strategist in arming his disciples with the mental fortitude and aptitude necessary to become great apostles of the adversary.

I look forward to finishing the reading of Satanism: A Beginner's Guide to the Religious Worship of Satan and Demons Volume 1: Philosophy and future works from Brother Nero as well.

Anything worth doing is worth perfecting.

very good for beginners
By jordan
I would like to say this is one of the few books that touches on traditional/theistic Satanism. Their are many books out their on modern Satanism, which makes it hard to find a book that is true in regards to devil worshipping. This book includes all of the basics that any beginner Satanist should know. It is well written.

I gave it 4 stars because:
Pros:
Contains no fluff or extras, you get what you buy
Touches on very important issues: such as sacrifice, prayer, family, and what a Satanist is
Contains commentary on the Al-Jilwah
Good arguments with no loopholes
Written to be easily understood by anyone

Cons:
Lacked a bit in the history of Satanism. Did not talk too much about the origins of Satan, other than from the bible. Should have mentioned some of the ancient religions such as the Sumerians, where IMO Satan originated
Did not talk too much about any of the Satanic holidays and did not go into too much detail of any pagan lore and its influences on Traditional Satanism
Did not cover much on Meditation and Magick

Overall a good read. For a beginner the Cons would not be too important, but someone more advanced may find this book a little too basic.

In closing- If your new to Satanism or interested this is a must buy. If your an experienced Satanist this book wouldn't be a bad purchase, but not required.

This and That
By Wicked
This book was ok, but I found it to have a lot of unrealistic expectations as far as how a Satanist should go about in society and within their daily lives. How this author lacks the open mind of the fact that every path is very unique, and to state in their written works that if one doesn't follow their certain "expectations" then they aren't a Satanist IMO is asinine. Other than that and a few other things this book would be helpful to a novice, but it wouldn't be one of my first choices for reference.

The Montauk Book of the Dead, by Peter Moon

A tale of the intrigue and power which hovers over the most sacred kernel of our existence: the secrets of life and death. Beginning with his early years, Peter Moon reveals fascinating details of exactly how he became involved with Scientology and serendipitously ended up working in the personal employ of L. Ron Hubbard aboard the latter’s famous “mystery ship” which was called the Apollo. Included in this riveting account is the story of how L. Ron Hubbard, at the age of twenty-seven, clinically “died” only to discover that he could “remote view.” From this state of consciousness, which would later be called “exterior,” he was able to access what he termed the answers to all of the questions that had ever puzzled philosophers or the minds of men. Transcribing this information into a work entitled “Excalibur,” which is still under lock and key to this day, he developed one of the most controversial movements in history: Dianetics and Scientology. The truth and import of the above can only be evaluated by the all out war which was waged by governmental forces and spy agencies to obtain the legally construed rights to the above mentioned work and all of the developments and techniques that ensued from it. Thi is the personal story of Peter Moon which not only pierces the mystery of death and reveals fascinating details of his years aboard L. Ron Hubbard’s mystery ship but gives the most candid and inside look ever at one of the most controversial figures in recent history.

Scientology is a subject I have kept at arms length based on crazy antics from celebrities like Tom Cruise
By Aaron
I was hesitant on this book because of the write up...Scientology is a subject I have kept at arms length based on crazy antics from celebrities like
Tom Cruise...but once I cracked the cover I could not put it down... Im an avid researcher and I was shocked at how much detail Peter Moon had about the entire Scientology movement and how much true information L Ron had sniffed out to attract the International intrigue that he is so well known for. Weather or not you are interested in scientology or not, if you want a fun read that is full of "true history", government intrigue, and detailed insider information as the power struggles of each, you cannot go wrong with this book.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-8–Ming and his grandmother have a tradition of visiting the Wishing Tree each Lunar New Year. Their wishes are written on special paper, tied to an orange, and tossed up into the branches of the tree. Ming's grandmother cautions him to wish thoughtfully, and following her advice, he realizes the fulfillment of all of his wishes except for one very important one: that his grandmother recover from a grave illness. Many years pass before Ming returns to the tree. He comes to forgive it when a friend points out that it has granted the wish his grandmother had made for him every year–that he be happy. Now the paper he offers to the tree is not a wish but rather a note of thanks. Thong's narrative voice has a gentle and musical quality that will lure readers into the book's pages, as well as into the landscape of this lovely little corner of China. Children will see in fastidious detail the beautiful wishing paper with its Chinese symbols and English translations. The rendering of the people is also superb. The exquisite art is done on watercolor paper with acrylics, which results in an unusual and vivid effect. A template for wishing paper is included in the back of the book. The lessons and observations in The Wishing Tree are ageless, and the book offers many opportunities for discussion.–Corrina Austin, Locke's Public School, St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada

From Booklist
PreS-Gr. 2. When Ming is five years old, his grandmother takes him to the Wishing Tree, where, like others in their Hong Kong village, they write wishes on pieces of paper weighted down by oranges and throw them into the branches of a giant banyan tree. Ming and Grandmother continue their annual visits to the tree until Grandmother grows ill. Bitter when his wish for Grandmother's recovery isn't granted, Ming avoids the tree until, years later, he returns to the village and acknowledges the happiness the tree brought. Although the simple, moving story is an excellent choice for Lunar New Year read-alouds and will work well to open class discussions about cultural traditions, it will also appeal throughout the year. Sentimental without being saccharine, it illustrates how traditions can help us voice our deepest wishes and emotions, and its vibrant acrylic paintings of the glorious tree abloom with wishes and fruit, which will show well to a crowd of young listeners, extend the tale's reassuring sense of hope. An author's note describes the true events that inspired the story. Gillian Engberg

Based on a real tree in Lam Tsuen, Hong Kong
By KSL
I absolutely love that this story is based upon a real Banyan "Wishing Tree" in a small village called Lam Tsuen in Hong Kong, and that there are other smaller ones among Hong Kong's countryside.

As if the story wasn't beautiful enough, the author took a lot of time explaining about wishing trees and how they are either banyan or camphor trees because these kinds of trees because they have aerial roots that curve & twist into unsual shapes that seem to look magical! She then goes on to tell her reader tells us that people come all though out the year to toss their wishes onto the wishing trees branches, but the majority of the people come during their Lunar New Year. She also speaks of the Ng Bo Dip which means "5 Treasures Piles" in Cantonese that the wishes are written. The brightly colored red & gold papers are then tied to a Mandarin Orange and thrown high into the branches of the wishing tree. I bet it's a beautiful sight! The author also includes a directions on how to make your very own Ng Bo Dip and also includes a black & white copy for the reader to photocopy, color and cut out!

A definate treasure to have in your home library!

Story based on Chinese custom
By Henry Berry
The boy Ming is disappointed in the wishing tree introduced to him by his grandmother when the tree fails to give him his wish that his aged grandmother survive her illness. But after a time when he does not go to it anymore, he comes near it again when a group of friends invite him to go with them. In talking with his friends and a nearby vendor, Ming realizes that the tree granted his grandmother's greatest wish for him--that he be happy. The simple tale is based on a real tree in a village in Hong Kong. The author Thong with bright pictures by McLennan describe how the Chinese write their wishes on pieces of paper, and toss these into the branches of the tree. Following the tale, the author gives directions on how young readers can follow this practice for themselves with their own wishing tree.

Davie Street Translations, by Daniel Zomparelli

To the street that is a village, Daniel Zomparelli conveys a liveliness and wit that rhetorically towel-flicks its way from the sardonic bathhouse banter of ancient Rome to the cinematic musical machismo of the poets of the San Francisco Renaissance, with each poem “translating” another chapter in his documentary of gay male culture in Vancouver.

To the tune of mononymous deities Beyonc, Madonna, Barbra, and Gaga, this home-brewed Catullus flirts with the very concept of “translation,” not only representing the movement and conversion of event, time, and idea to the written word, but also deploying a crafty methodology that in the style of Robin Blaser and Jack Spicer emphasizes an aesthetic sensibility and musicality that pervades the pretty wireless shell of personal relations. These are also letters to the anonymous, the proud, the panicky, the petrified, and particularly the lonely, written everywhere—upon ripped bodies and diner napkins, upon bathroom stalls, and in Craigslist personals and Miss Lonelyhearts columns.

Ranging from the rhapsodic to the epigrammatic with his dangerously experimental narrative that snorts the alphabet, Daniel Zomparelli imbues the fast-paced drug and party culture of Davie Village’s young gay males with grand poignancy and pathos. Stitching serial poems into this imaginary patchwork in the fashion of Robert Duncan, with drag queens and porn fantasy figures in tow, Zomparelli brashly faces up to fears of HIV and gay bashing. On this poetic street that is a universe, we turn away from violence, “dance fight, or turn it into a musical / West Side-like.”

With poetic tributes to his Vancouver idols Billeh Nickerson, George Stanley and Michael V. Smith, Zomparelli demonstrates, to paraphrase Oscar Wilde, that the young are always ready to give to those who are older than themselves the full benefits of their inexperience.

A stunning queer poet
By AJDex
I am a very big fan of queer poetry as well as Canadian literature. Zomparelli's collection does not disappoint in either respect. His poems are visceral and raw. He not only revels in rich language but also plays with form, such as the poem Rapid HIV testing which reads the same backwards and forward and several poems that incorporate song lyrics as lines.
