Brash, cocky, and unbeatable with a sword (well, almost), Sam of Haywood is the most promising Paladin trainee in the kingdom of Thule. The only problem is that Sam is really Lady Samantha, daughter of the 17th duke of Haywood, and if her father has his way, she'll be marrying a Paladin, not becoming one.

But Sam has never held much interest in playing damsel in distress, and so she rescues herself from a lifetime of boredom and matrimonial drudgery. Disguised as a boy, Sam leaves home behind to fight demons - the most dangerous monsters in Thule - alongside the kingdom's elite warriors. Pity that Tristan Lyons, the Paladin assigned to train her, is none other than the hero of her childhood. He hasn't recognized her, but if he does, he'll take away her sword and send her packing. As demons wreak havoc across the land, rebellion stirs in the West, led by a rival faction of warriors. A war between men is coming, and Sam must pick a side. Will saving the kingdom cost her life - or just her heart?

An EXPLOSIVE read that took me by surprise and did NOT let up until the very end!!!
By Alicia
4.5 STARS

PALADIN was a dark and entangled world where demons roam killing anything in their paths, and lies and deception baths the streets of their world, and one girl is willing to fight for what she believes in, even if she has to become someone else in the process…

THE PALADIN was such a great book that I thoroughly enjoyed! I was pleasantly surprised of how much I ended up liking this book. Because to be honest, I didn't have very high hopes for it after reading the synopsis. It sounded too common to be anything spectacular, but I was still intrigued enough to give it a try! And let me tell you, I am soooo happy I went out on a limb with this one, because it did NOT disappoint one bit!!

I enjoyed the world-building a lot. We weren't just in one setting throughout this novel, we traveled all over their fictional county. All while engaging in epic sword fights, evading vicious enemies, slaughtering evil demons, and fulfilling their High Commanders dubious agenda. I liked that the plot kept moving and we didn't stay in one place for more then a day or so, and with each new atmosphere we had a new thrilling adventure that brought tons of fun!

All three of the main characters were awesome. First up we have Sam, the quick tempered headstrong girl pretending to be a boy in order to follow her dreams of becoming a member of the Paladins, fighting to take down the wicked demons wreaking havoc all over their world. Sam has a feisty and determine personality, when she wants something bad enough she won't take no for an answer, and I admired that about her! She's strong mentally and physically, and a badass with a sword, and just as skilled in combat. I REALLY liked Sam from the very beginning, and by the end, I LOVED her!!

Next we have Tristin, the desirable and unbeatable Top Paladin that is either hated or praised for his skill and contbution to the Paladins. I liked Tristin a lot too, he was a great addition to their little trio group, and was Sam and Braeden's strong mentor and leader. He was the glue that held them all together. I liked his dominance and sure demeanor he carried. He was definitely attractive and would make any girl squeal in giddiness if he was near. But for me he was just not the one for Sam, and in the end I hated his bitterness he carried for her, and the lack of respect for her feelings. But other then that, Tristin was a GREAT character that I look forward to seeing more of in book two!!

Then we have my favorite male pratanitost, Braeden!! He raged a heart full of emotions within me! Braeden was half demon half human, but was always categorized and berated as a lowly demon, regardless of his noble acts. But in truth, even with his half demon blood, Braeden had a heart that would put most humans to shame! But he also had a dark side that would unintentionally crave horrible things, and would even ride the line of evil sometimes. But nevertheless, Braeden was a wonderful character with plenty of development and great personalization. And I LOVED the slow-burn relationship him and Sam developed throughout this book. It was sweet and perfect, and so utterly right in so many ways!

THE PLOT:

Samantha, Daughter of the Duke of Haywood is not ready to give into her fathers insane plans of marriage and popping out babies to a noble Lord. Instead, she wants her freedom to be who she really is, to wield her sword and fight like any good solider, but most importantly, to have the skill and knowhow to take down the same monsters that took her mother away, demons! And two years after her mothers brutal murder, she's ready to finally take the first step in claiming her life as hers, but first she has to become someone else…

Sam has always favored swords over dresses, and thanks to her mother pressuring her father, she was taught at a young age to defend herself. And now that demons killed her mother she wants to join the Paladins, a organization that defends the citizens against demons. But theirs just one problem, you have to be a boy to join, something "Samantha" is not. Until she cuts off her hair, binds her chest, and straps on her sword on top of boys clothes, now she must convince the Paladins that she is not only a boy, but also worthy of joining their cause…

Accepted into the Paladins and faced with more then she signed up for, Sam has to do her best to blend in and stay off anyone's radar. But when she's teamed with Tristin, her childhood savor, she realizes just how way in over her head she really is. But then another Paladin trainee is paired with her and Tristin, and she finds it hard keeping her heart from pounding and doing weird flips. But when you’re a girl pretending to be a boy, having uncertain feelings for a sunned half demon makes things a little complicated.

But all that could be the least of their worries as a new group is rising the ranks and challenging everything the Paladins stand for, and forcing their honor and motive to be questioned. In order to find answers, Sam, Tristin, and Braeden are tasked with a mission all over the lands, seeking answers and restoring the Paladins name. But as Sam and her little trio start to unravel the deceiving web, they start to question everything they once knew about the Paladins, and their leader that rules them all…

But with the demon count rising, and demons who have not been seen in thousands of years showing up and killing anyone they can get their hands on, and running into enemy groups as they travel, and Sam's undeniable attraction to Braeden, their all in for one hell of a ride. But first, Sam has to make them believe she's really a boy!!

Overall, PALADIN was such a fun read that surprised me in so many ways. I loved just about everything about this book and am eagerly awaiting and anticipating the much needed sequel releasing in 2016.

Dreams of swords and honor!
By eyes.2c
Great new female hero. Slater's writing reminds me a tad of Sarah J. Maas with a dash of Tamora Pierce.
A tried and true theme with a difference. Young woman (of noble birth) wants to be a Paladin, lives for sword fighting, and definitely doesn't want to be married off to decorate someone's holdings and birth the required heirs.
Disguising herself as a boy, Sam (Samatha) heads off to paladin headquarters to try her luck.
(I've got to say that all that breast binding and then hiding how the the 'call of nature' impacts differently for women would wear me out, let alone holding my own in sword fighting against a hulking successful Paladin. How did she get away with it? Privacy would not be the first thing on the travelling Paladins' minds).
She succeeds. An unforeseen circumstance--her co-trainee Braeden is a half demon. Her trainer, her hero from her past, Paladin Tristan Lyons, First of the Sword.
Training, fighting demons, following the High Commander's bidding, and the continued battle to disguise her gender do take a toll, as does entering the enclave of a rival organization, The Uriel. It is feared that they seek to oust the Paladins. Sam and her team find more than they'd bargained for. Frighteningly more! The Paladin are in trouble!
Well written, Sam's story exercises such a pull that you soon find yourself deep into the action and just snarl at having to face the day's busyness. A feisty young woman who won't settle for any less than she feels driven to do. Translate that drive to today's young women and here's a message for all to follow their dream. They can come true!

Very Good Read
By Lis
It's actually more like a 3.5 star book, I've read this first on Wattpad, got my copy and finished it in less than eight hours.

I can say that Sally Slater's published version is indeed better than the draft on Wattpad. The fighting scenes have improved greatly and now flow seamlessly, the interactions between Sam, Braeden and Tristan are still both hilarious, heartfelt and something I think you'd see in the real world between friends and respected co-workers. I really do think she fleshed Sam out more in this as well, we really get to see just why she wants to be a Paladin so much. She lost her mother to a demon attack and was powerless to help. I have to give points to Ms. Slater, Sam is probably one of the best female characters I've seen in ages. So many these days that are "strong" refuse anything feminine and look down on other women who love wearing pretty clothes and want to get married. I really loved and appreitacted that Sam wanted both to be a warrior and still be a woman. She didn't scorn others who just wanted to be the one who waited at home for their men. I really think that was a nice theme to have in this novel; that there are all kinds of strong women. It's not about kicking ass like the guys, it's about having the choice to if that's what you want. I love that Sam found a way both to be Lady Samantha, and Sam of Haywood-she realized she didn't have to give up either to get what she wanetd out of life.

Breaden was a nice romantic lead, a bit angsty but it did make sense Sam's stregnth didn't take away from his and if he ever tried to tell Sam what she wanted she put him in his place quick. To use her own words "I know my own mind". He lived in a world where his heritage would be feared by most people. He grew up being an outcast. The powers given to him because of it was also something I liked, being able to sense the demons, healing so fast was incredible and so vivid in my mind while I was reading! I also liked how it came at a steep price, too much use and their gos his control. I liked about his powers-powerful yes, but it came at a price. I hope we will be seeing more of his backstory in the sequel!

Trisitan was another character I liked quiet a bit, honorable, perhaps too much and got into some trouble as a result. His backstory broke my heart and it really explained his loyalty to the High Commander and the Paladins as a whole. I think he changed the most out of the whole gang to be honest. Rather than trust blindly that the Paladins where doing what was right he learned to question and act a little more independantly. I will be looking forward to see what he does in the sequel with the Uriel!

I gave this book 3.5 stars because the characters were fun and interesting, it carried some wonderful themes, a compelling villain and this, my favorite line: "If this was a fairytale I'd be my own Gods-dammned knight!" However, I expected more from this novel, I wanted it more fleshed out how Paladin's select those they take on, Sam's relationship with her dad (we only were told of it, we never really got to see it), how Sam escaped from Haywood, more close calls with the two boys finding out she was a girl. (They traveled together for months, there should have been some close calls. Late night bathroom breaks, periods, something to plant the seeds in their minds.)

Overall some things fell sort of my expectations, but on the whole I really really enjoyed this book and I will be putting out an order for the next book!

Following Father Chiniquy: Immigration, Religious Schism, and Social Change in Nineteenth-Century Illinois, by Caroline B Brettell

In the late 1850s and early 1860s, the attention of the Catholic and Protestant religious communities around the world focused on a few small settlements of French Canadian immigrants in northeastern Illinois. Soon after arriving in their new home, a large number of these immigrants, led by Father Charles Chiniquy, the charismatic Catholic priest who had brought them there, converted to Protestantism. In this anthropological history, Caroline B. Brettell explores how Father Chiniquy took on both the sacred and the secular authority of the Catholic Church to engineer the religious schism and how the legacy of this rift affected the lives of the immigrants and their descendants for generations. This intriguing study of a nineteenth-century migration of French Canadians to the American Midwest offers an innovative perspective on the immigrant experience in America.

Brettell chronicles how Chiniquy came to lead approximately one thousand French Canadian families to St. Anne, Illinois, in the early 1850s and how his conflict with the Catholic hierarchy over the ownership and administration of church property, delivery of the mass in French instead of Latin, and access to the Bible by laymen led to his excommunication. Drawing on the concept of social drama—a situation of intensely lived conflict that emerges within social groups—Brettell explains the religious schism in terms of larger ethnic and religious disagreements that were happening elsewhere in the United States and in Canada. Brettell also explores legal disputes, analyzes the reemergence of Catholicism in St. Anne in the first decade of the twentieth century, addresses the legacy of Chiniquy in both the United States and Quebec, and closely examines the French Canadian immigrant communities, focusing on the differences between the people who converted to Protestantism and those who remained Catholic.

Occurring when nativism was pervasive and the anti-immigrant Know-Nothing Party was at its height, Chiniquy’s religious schism offers an opportunity to examine a range of important historical and anthropological issues, including immigration, ethnicity, and religion; changes in household and family structure; the ways social identities are constructed and reconstructed through time; and the significance of charismatic leadership in processes of social and religious change. Through its multidisciplinary approach, Brettell’s enlightening study provides a pioneering assessment of larger national tensions and social processes, some of which are still evident in modern immigration to the United States.

Review
“Full of insights and wonderful detail, this well-written book tells a fascinating story of an often forgotten figure in American immigration history. By focusing on the French Canadian religious leader Charles Chiniquy in the mid-nineteenth-century Midwest and using impressive skills in anthropology and history, Brettell brings fresh perspectives to the study of French Canadian migration as well as the analysis of broader theoretical issues of social conflict, identity formation, and charismatic leadership.”—Nancy Foner, coauthor of Strangers No More: Immigration and the Challenges of Integration in North America and Western Europe

Excellent book to have!
By Fred J Fuhrer
I like this book. There are so many hams that "buy off the shelf" already put together radios. But this book SHOWS you how to build
the things we normally take for granted. I'm gathering parts for a shortwave receiver detailed in this book - easy for me as I've built so many of my shack accessories, but a tech or SWL could build these projects just as easily. This book should be put on CD, or sold as a download on the 'net. If you build your own equipment, you can understand how it works, and be able to repair it yourself. That is the advantage of building your own stuff.

Excellent, imaginative, fun, and useful
By Jeffrey L. Cooper
This book has a lot of fun radio designs. It doesn't teach radio principles. I think it's for builders who want to fool around with some differrent ideas. I liked the tube regenerative radios. He mostly used 1S4 and 3S4 tubes which are inexpensive and their filaments can be run on a C-cell or two. For B+ he puts 2 or 3 or more cheap 9V batteries in series. He winds coils on plastic film canisters and uses easy-to-find components ... EXCEPT for the ZN414Z and the ZN416E. Fortunately the MK484 appears to be a replacement for the ZN414Z. So every design in the book is still doable. Neat ideas! AA1WW

A Perry
By perran09
This is an old book printed in 1993. Since that time many of the parts that are used to build the projects are not commonly available 18 years later. A large number of the projects use the ZN414 chip which, on first glance in not available at Digikey, Jameco, or the Circuit Specialists. It does have some good building techniques and useful general information. Tab Books has some good information, but the writing quality usually is not as good as other technical publishers. Excellent Intro to an Exciting Framework
By David Nunez
This is an excellent introduction to Meteor. The book is short yet the content covered here is more than adequate. The author is a good teacher as well, incrementally introducing the reader to new concepts with a playful tone and he seems adept at anticipating the thought patterns and confusion points for beginners.

Sometimes, computer science authors write their books too much like their code itself, defining all their concepts up front (the way they would declare and set values for all the variables at the beginning of a function) and then expanding upon each piece in the section that follows. This pattern is not best for the reader: it's hard to get into a rhythm with the author and results in having to go back to the earlier portions of the book or chapter to re-read the way the author define their concepts as they finally start to sink in. I personally appreciate it when an author tries instead to establish a good flow and introduces ideas dynamically, at the time when each idea can be most appropriately introduced and can be reinforced most effectively by the surrounding content. This author seems to understand this pattern better than most and it makes him a good teacher for it.

What I enjoyed most about this book was the structure of the content, chapter by chapter. The book begins by trying to get you up and running with Meteor and building a simple application as quickly as possible, and its amazing how simple it is to get to that point! It isn't until the third chapter that you go through the necessary high-level discussions of the Meteor framework, the needs it addresses, the history of MVC-like patterns in web development, etc., and in most computer science books I believe you'd be reading through this stuff up-front, anxiously waiting to get started and see it in action. But this book has such a nice flow to it because discussions like these come at the appropriate time and have a reinforcing effect rather than leaving you feeling like "okay, get on with it and let's see some code". The latter half of the book then builds upon the earlier, simple application with more realistic looking UI design, C.R.U.D. operation implementation, authentication, robust configuration of role-based event broadcasting and database access, and finally to deployment. So you can definitely say the content here is covered from basics to basic tour of high-level concepts.

It's hard to be overwhelmed by what seems to be a glut of JavaScript frameworks out there, but after reading this book I think it would be even harder for one not to feel extremely excited by this one. Meteor is a full-stack JS framework and streamlines many high-level patterns and technologies that you'd end up implementing by hand in many other frameworks (or at least be mildly challenged to gather them all together with existing modules). Web socket integration (in a publish/subscribe pattern) between your data-store (by default is setup for you in Meteor as MongoDb) and client-side JS, the ability to operate offline, single-command project creation, single-command deployment, automatic file watching (live reload), easy 3rd party package integration (again, with a single command), and isomorphic JS are all available to you out-of-the-box with Meteor. I suppose Angular is following suite with Firebase, but - as the author mentions in the final chapter - you can even integrate Meteor with Angular or React if you prefer them as front-end clients. It's almost as if Meteor can be the glue that holds together many scattered technologies and techniques you've learned over the years in JS and allow you to focus instead on development.

Scratches the Surface
By rdagger
I think the subtitle Learn to develop powerful web applications in minutes with Meteor is a bit of a stretch. This is a brief introduction to Meteor. It will get you started, but you can get a comparable intro if you just go to the Meteor website and do their free To-do app tutorial. It would be difficult to find a comprehensive paper book because the platform is evolving so rapidly. The best resource I’ve found so far is the eBook by Discover Meteor which has been frequently updated although it is currently only Iron Router and Blaze (no Flow or React).

Quite useful if you are a beginning to intermediate developer
By Bharat C. Ruparel
I have Isaac strack's Packtpub video on Meteor, his Meteor Cookbook and now this, so I am a bit familiar with his teaching style :)
There is no question that Issac knows his stuff well. This book is very good like his video and the cookbook. However, it is not titled appropriately. There is beginning material and then more advanced material mixed together. I have been working with Meteor for the last few months so I am a bit familiar with it. Without that knowledge, it would be difficult climb for a beginner as far as this book is concerned. But if you use this book in combination with other books and materials available on the web, then it is quite useful.
As far as the code that comes with the book, it works fine with a few minor glitches here and there. But I am experienced enough in Meteor to work through them. I am not sure if a rank beginner can do that. My constructive criticism of the code is that it can be refactored quite a bit to make it clearer, but may be the author had a page count limit on the book or something similar.
