Big Book of Bass is aptly named.

This book is an encyclopedic tome (400 pages worth) for those targeting largemouth and smallmouth bass anywhere in the country. Section 1 is devoted to the largemouth and Section 2 to the smallmouth bass. The two sections parallel each other in content with focus on one species or the other. Overall the book provides comprehensive descriptions of bass biology, spawning behavior and habitat requirements. It then delves into seasonal movements in various habitats for example: rivers & backwaters; small streams; ponds; reservoirs, etc. Then equipment is covered including soft plastics, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, boats, rods & reels, and much more; followed by a chapter on fishing techniques under various conditions i.e., weeds, structure, flooded timber, weather fronts, etc. Techniques are given in exquisite detail. Example from page 338: "To locate bass in a weedbed, start at the downwind edge of the cover and move slowly into the wind. Then flip the jig into any opening in the milfoil...keep your line as vertical as possible...."

The book is full of beautiful color photographs showing various habitat types, underwater shots of fish behavior and equipment. In fact, it would make a handsome coffee table book. All in all it is a wonderful read. No matter what level of expertise you may have you will gain valuable insights about these two great sport fish.

I also have Keith A. Jones' book Knowing BASS and I worried whether the content would have significant overlap. However, it does not. Knowing Bass emphasizes bass physiology, sensory perception, and experiments testing the reaction of bass to various fishing lures. Most of the experiments take place under the controlled conditions of a fish tank. On the other hand, The Big Book focuses on habitat and natural conditions as determinants of fishing technique and lures. Actually, each is complementary to the other and together they make a perfect whole.

Definitely the HOTTEST Gerrard book I've read

First of all, do NOT read this one in public if there is a chance that someone could be reading over your shoulder. (I was trying to read it at a Cub Scout pack meeting and had to set it aside and bite my nails until I could get home and read in private.)
Holy hotness! It's a short read and yet they still get their happily ever after in a believable outcome. Thanks to Karyn Gerrard for my little Christmas present to myself. I'm one happy reader. :D

Unique, saucy fun. This story about a jaded Victorian male prostitute and his curious,intelligent female client is unlike anything I've read in the Romance genre. Lots of sexiness and characterization in a small package. Wonderful and slightly strange slice of life story that is very romantic at its heart. Well done.

The Queen Mother and the Woman who would have been Queen

I have read many books about both women, both of whom had massive control over their husbands. Most books devote 1 or 2 chapters to the personality differences and animosity between the two women. This is the first book solely devoted to the conflict between the Queen Mother and "That Woman". I enjoyed this book, it is well documented, and explains quite clearly the reasons for the feud. Of particular interest, to me, was the description of the relationship between the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and the Nazi party, which resulted into a trip to Nazi Germany during World War 2 to be met by Hitler, as well as the role of the Queen Mother to the people of England during the war.

Anyone who is interested in the British royal family would enjoy this.

I have actually read this book several times, but had not seen it for a while. The library copy was in pieces, so I wanted one of my own. This is a fascinating biography of two women who seemed to be at opposite ends of the spectrum, but actually lived parallel lives.

STUDY OF EUROPEAN ROYALTY

I was not disappointed in this book. It helps understand reasoning for exile of abdicated King and Mrs. Simpson. He could not have remained in England due to Mrs. Simpson's interference with King George and society functions. She was definitely the head of that family, and it is hard to understand why King Edward abdicated and gave up so much for her. He had such a responsibility as monarch that was so much greater than himself and his wants. Thank goodness King George and Queen Elizabeth were monarchs during the war. There is no doubt that he gave everything he had to his duties which caused the victory in England, and thank goodness Queen Elizabeth, the current monarch, is of the same mind. She is so much to be admired for giving herself to her duties as monarch first, and her strength is evident in her actions. When her family has been ridiculous and ignored their primary responsibilities, she has remained the strength of the country. I am sure she has taught William how to effectively rule. I highly recommend this book because it is a great example of what happens when responsibilities are ignored for selfishness.

Great book for busy managers and students

This is a great book about a new topic called "Adaptive Business Intelligence". It is basically about modern Artificial Intelligence (AI) that is used to solve tough real-life optimization and prediction problems. The authors really know what they are talking about and have many years of business and teaching experience. They are also running a software company specializing in Adaptive Business Intelligence.

I was skeptical when I picked up this book and thought to myself that they can't possibly explain all those modern AI techniques without formulas. However, the book is very easy to read and really does cover modern AI techniques without getting into a lot of nitty gritty details (i.e., no formulas). They also have a detailed real-life example that they frequently refer to. The example is very good and I quickly saw how I could use Adaptive Business Intelligence.

The authors explain everything down to earth and on top of that it was fun to read and also reads well. I also liked that they have some references to other books in case you want to dive into a particular topic.

All in all it's a great book that makes modern science easy to understand for busy people. Even non-technical managers like myself will have no problems understanding the different techniques and how they apply to their own business. I highly recommend this book. It's definitely worth reading!

PS: I borrowed the book to my sister who studies IT in California and she told me that it's a great introduction to modern AI. She actually never returned the book since she kept as a reference for one of her classes.

Conceptual book, not good in practice

I use the book as a reference for one of my classes on analytics and decision support systems. The book has a good introduction to the topic, explains concepts well, but it lacks a good discussion on implementation and practical applications. It is not a book to learn how to do things in ABI. The authors develop a running example of an application of ABI systems in the car rental industry, but it is hard to see how that would translate into other applications. The adaptability chapter and discussions along the book are very short and not very insightful. In my class, I complement this book with other books on how to develop decision support systems using Visual Basic and prediction methods using the R statistical language.

THERE IS ALWAYS ROOM FOR ONE MORE QUALITY BOOK ON THIS SUBJECT

In the Preface to his book Prof.Tuck poses the question: "[W]hy we might need a new book on Roman art." I shall gladly answer the question for him. Currently, there are two superb books on Roman art either one of which would be an exellent choice for classroom use. They are: 1) ROMAN ART by Ramage & Ramage (sixth edition); 2) A HISTORY OF ROMAN ART by Kleiner (Enhanced Edition). Both of those books are exceedingly well illustrated with the vast majority in brilliant color. Each has a Glossary and extensive Bibliography. The Kleiner book has a somewhat larger Bibliography while the Ramage & Ramage includes Ancient authors. Both are eminently readable and quite comprehensive given the fact that they are designed to be used primarily as textbooks. All that being said, some of the advantages of the Tuck book from the standpoint of this reviewer is his emphasis upon VISUAL analysis and its coordination with factual material, the way he uses his Timelines especially in conjunction with each chapter, his incorporation of marginal glosses in the text (the latter two are associated with a website specifically designed for this book), additional images of works of art relevant to this book along with "sample lessons, assignments, and related educational resources" (both items for Instructors also to be found on the website), and last but not least Tuck's A HISTORY OF ROMAN ART (paper back) costs less than 60% of the K and R&R pb versions. Publishers are going to have to find a way to produce textbooks that do not cost over $100 and beyond. It's bad enough that EJ Brill and many University Presses charge upwards of $300+ for hardcover books while never issuing their pb counterparts thereby eliminating the possibility of purchase by both students and teachers alike!

Another positive feature of Tuck's book is the way he takes a middle ground when it comes to the controversial dating of certain objects. For example, the Capitoline She-wolf is now thought to be 13th century AD (R&R) or 5th century BC (K) while T presents both possibilities. Academic scholars are finally beginning to wake up when it comes to the Chronological problems and dating of Ancient History and Ancient Art History. Art History is still a very youthful field. The discovery of King Tut's tomb and the beginnings of the Indus Valley civilization go back only to 1922, less than 100 years ago. The task of rewriting innumberable books may be a Herculean one but must be done. The dates for the beginning of Dynastic Egypt have already been shifted down by more than 2000 years. The time of Hammurabi has been shifted down by nearly a millennium. The Greek Dark Age may be a mirage. And so forth. Starting on p.2, Tuck discusses the problems of forgery, provenance, and "dating dilemmas in Roman Art History" and is to be commended for doing so. The third century AD is still a mess for those historians and art historians who have to deal with this period. Terms such as "Late Antique" have become as meaningless as "the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire". The opening chapter of Tuck's book also deals with the subjects of: "Restoration Issues"; "The Role of Elites in Public Art and Architecture"; the relationship of Roman art and architecture to that of the Greeks, and much more. Overall, Prof. Tuck applies an interdisciplinary approach to the study of Roman art and architecture throughout his book and is to be commended for it. Had this book been available two to three months earlier, as a Prof.of Ancient, Classical, and Oriental Art, I would have used it as a textbook in my own course on Roman Art & Architecture. It has my highest recommendation.
