This book is so creative! The plot has a depth I didn't expect from a short story- I was kept wondering & contemplating until the reveal at the end. The conclusion is endearing & beautifully illustrated (I especially like the dancing cat!). I love the texture & minute detail on every page, & especially the use of watercolor. I've been a fan for years & can't wait to see more! :)

Another comprehensive classic of the evidence-base for the treatment of headache

Dr. Cesar has written an astonishing mountain of books & superb research studies lately regarding physiotherapy...each of them are immediate classics in the sense of being the most comprehensive presentations of the chosen subject matter available. This textbook on Tension-Type and Cervicogenic Headache is another brilliant contribution to our understanding of this devastating condition!

This is a rare book written by many different professionals who treat this difficult human problem, and it includes pharmacological (the most common) and non-pharmacological (the most underused and potentially most effective) approaches to this problem. The pathophysiology of headache and the trigeminocervical nucleus is explained repeatedly, from different angles which only increases the reader's clear focus upon these mechanisms and it describes muscle and joint interventions, dry needling, and other complementary and alternative medical approaches including naturopathy, acupuncture, nutrition and more. This multidisciplinary approach is sometimes needed; and the latest evidence from all these branches of healing regarding this problem is vast and impressive and very useful for victims of this condition and the clinicians who treat it. I love this book!

I have been learning acrylic by trial and error. Lots of error. I have repainted my first two paintings several times when I was disappointed. The book came today. Already I see what caused some of my disappointments. Mixing my paint like a wash when I wanted a glaze. Putting down the wrong "base coat" before doing a wash or glaze. Using too much extender and flow release rather than acrylic gloss medium. Using mat medium instead of gloss when I was desiring a transparent layer. I have only read a few pages but I was so happy to have my questions answered, I stopped reading and tapped out this review on my phone. Thank you!

Great addition to my "acrylics" library.

I have recently taken up painting and, in order to expose myself to an array of acrylic techniques, I've purchased 4 books, including this one. I love the techniques in this book and admire all of the painting examples shown. Some of the techniques shown in the 3 other books I own don't particularly appeal to me so I have to "pick and choose" among what's featured to garner some new ideas I'd like to try. In contrast, I find everything in this book to be very appealing and worthy of experimentation at some point. It's my favorite book, thus far.

Great book with a lot of inspiration

At 3am, during a surge in creative thought, I encountered this book on Amazon, the Kindle version. I bought it trusting it was indeed what I wanted. So I then rolled over and went back to sleep anticipating looking at this the following day. I am a weaver, painter, and photographer. Some of the techniques I was already familiar with having developed them by myself, but this book added so much I was ready to head to the paint store and empty my savings account. Well worth the buy, well worth the read, and very inspirational on a very creative level that can be transferred to other mediums other than acrylic painting... An acrylic veil can be used in multiple ways with multiple mediums creating some very interesting results... In two words, I only have this to say :"Get it"... well worth the money and the time to read...

In a study of interest primarily to academics, Dalton, a professor of political science at Manhattan's Barnard College, describes how Gandhi's work in South Africa and India helped him develop the subtle relationship between swaraj (freedom as self-rule or self-control) and satyagraha (nonviolent force born of truth and love). The author elucidates the criticisms of Gandhi by such contemporaries as Rabindranath Tagore and M. N. Roy, pointing out that neither man found a way to connect freedom and power as Gandhi did in his 24-day protest march in 1930 against the British tax on salt in India, and in his 1947 fast in response to communal violence in Calcutta. Dalton offers an intriguing chapter comparing Gandhi, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., and suggests that while King embodied Gandhi's tactics and Malcolm X traveled a similar journey of personal emancipation, neither managed to combine both swaraj and satyagraha . What a refreshing study of Gandhi's political thought! Void of the usual psychological mumbo jumbo, this book presents an intellectually satisfying analysis of the Gandhian concepts of satyagraha and swaraj , of their interconnection, and of their application in his quest for Indian independence. Tracing the origins of Gandhi's ideals in ancient Vedic texts and in the body of Western philosophy, Dalton (political science, Barnard) demonstrates Gandhi's first tentative use of satyagraha , the power of truth and love, in nonviolent protests in South Africa and then with increasing confidence in India in the 1930s. Here Gandhi linked satyagraha with swaraj , self-rule or self-restraint, to push forward his case against British Imperial rule. Dalton's focus on Gandhi's salt march of 1930 and his fast of 1946 in Calcutta illustrate with great clarity these principles. Although admiring Gandhi, Dalton eschews his canonization for a clear, thoughtful study, the best in recent years.

Worthy study of Gandhi (1869-1948) as a political and social leader, by longtime Gandhi scholar Dalton (Political Science/Barnard). According to the author, Gandhi built his revolutionary platform on two moral principles. One was swaraj, meaning ``freedom''--not in the modern American sense of unbridled choice but rather social and individual liberation achieved through ``discipline ruled from within.'' The other was satyagraha, or ``non-violent power.'' Here, too, Gandhi diverged from modern sensibilities, for satyagraha to him was more than passive resistance: It entailed active compassion, even love, for one's enemies. Although Gandhi later moderated some of his ideas--for instance, his wholesale rejection of modern civilization--Dalton makes it clear that the Mahatma's radical spiritual stance was the inexhaustible force that powered Indian resistance to British rule. Gandhi's greatest triumph was his march to the sea in 1930 protesting the infamous British salt tax, an event that Dalton describes in detail, as he does the spectacular Calcutta fast for peace during the 1947 Hindu-Moslem hostilities. Less well known, but also amply covered here, are the many harsh evaluations of Gandhi by fellow countrymen, most notably Rabindranath Tagore, Nobel-winning poet, who attacked the Mahatma for fostering nationalism rather than world peace. Revelatory, too, is Gandhi's own misstep in urging Jews to combat Hitler through satyagraha. Dalton concludes with a brief comparison of Gandhi, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King, Jr., and with a glance at Gandhi's lessons for posterity. The POWER of the Truth Force

I don't care to duplicate the academic praise seen in the above reviews. But I can tell you simply that Dennis Dalton was my professor in a class on Non-Violence at Columbia Univ. and it changed my life. At a period of time when I was an atheist, believing that all religion was just a set of rules to control people, D. Dalton demonstrated through the example of Ghandi that the Love and Truth force can be a powerful vehicle for change. This completely changed my view point from victim to activist. One could actually have spirituality from within, instead of imposed upon him or her from without. A tool, not a punishment. The 'truth' one has seems to be irrelevant; it is one's passion and belief and willingness to stand behind that Truth that triumphs. If it is True in the archetypal sense, others will join (not follow) you. And by direct action at the heart level, you can touch and change nations. This is not about passive resistance; this is about direct non-violent confrontation. It is about appealing to the best, the highest nature, of that which you confront. He showed me that one can change the world with one's heart; that truth can win. And now I just wait for Dennis to write the definative book on Emma Goldman... Truly a great teacher and initiator of the inner spark of one's own truth force. And with Ghandi as his guiding archetype, this book should be on the reading list of every activist.

What a brilliant analysis of Gandhi's philosophy! This is an insightful collection of essays that illuminates the essential relationship between Gandhi's theory of non-violence and his practice of the same. Dennis Dalton uses two powerful examples: the Salt March of 1930 and the fast to end Partition-related violence in 1947. There is a fascinating conclusion between Gandhi's ideas and those of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, illustrating the relevance of Gandhi's thought to present day issues.

Solid Scholarship

Dennis Dalton has an extraordinary piece of scholarship here on Gandhi. It might be better suited for Gandhi experts, or at least those who have read a bit about Gandhi. This is not a biography. If you want that begin with Louis Fischer books on Gandhi. Dalton does contribute an exceptional analysis of Gandhi's nonviolent program, his commitment to "swaraj" or home rule, and all his political interests. Dalton also critiques and understands well the strength and limitations of nonviolence. This book is ideal for those interested in religion and politics, who preferably have at least some biographical knowledge of Gandhi. For example, having read the Fischer books, or Gandhi's "Autobiography" and his book "Hind Swaraj" would put you in a prime position to grasp Dalton's very fine work. Overall highly recommended for the hard core Gandhi enthusiast or scholar. Dalton's book concludes with an illuminating comparison and contrast of King, Malcolm X and Gandhi.

A Carefully Crafted Rip-off

Have you ever received a colorful package of materials from IMP (International Masters Publishers)? Has it amazed you with the company's generosity ("Enhancing your Mind Body Spirit gives away over $1,000,000 in free gifts!"), enchanted you with a feeling of mystery ("The secrets of Mind Body Spirit can now be yours...") and tickled you with a feeling that you're just plain special ("Congratulations! You've already been awarded a Free Gift Package.")? The deal sounds good enough. After all, it couldn't hurt to get a free sample valued at up to $47.95 and a free gift if you reply quickly. It only costs $9.95 for the next set of cards, so why not?

This product, along with IMP in general, is an example of manipulative marketing scams at their best. Throw away the solicitation you received now before you get sucked into spending well more money than you bargained for. Sure, each packet of 12 cards "only" costs $9.95 (more like $12 after postage and tax), but what they don't tell you is that there are some 99 packets in the collection. Even with their "savings" options, this means the entire set will run you up around $1000, with each two-sided color card costing $1 a piece. Given that you can buy better books covering the same material for a significantly less amount of money, steer widely clear of IMP's scam. The little extras they throw on don't make up for the inflated cost either. The essential oils, for instance, are always diluted in a carrier oil and of generally poor quality and while I liked some of the incense they sent, five small sized sticks is hardly generous.

It's really too bad that the product is such a scam to collect. After collecting about a dozen packets myself, I found a seller on eBay offering the completed set for about $130. This, I thought, was a pretty reasonable price, and it gave me a chance to evaluate the content on its own merits aside from the unfortunate marketing. There really is some great material in the set. The pages have the visually-oriented in mind and are full of beautiful color pictures, artwork, and diagrams. I particularly like the posters, whose beauty sometimes makes them suitable for wall decorations! While lacking authority given the absence of authors and a bibliography, if you're discerning, there are plenty of gems to mine from this product in spite of its occasional factual errors. The breadth of topics includes: aromatherapy, herbal remedies, stress relief and good sleep, healthy eating, a massage course, a meditation course, a yoga course, a feng shui course, spiritual healing, world healing traditions, friendship bonds, spiritual sexuality, interpreting your dreams, an astrology course, a tarot course, a palmistry course, fortune telling traditions, using crystals, charms and symbols, nature magic, casting spells, Wiccan traditions, spiritual experiences, the craft of mediums and clairvoyants, and encounters with ghosts. That's a lot of stuff, with some sections are longer than others. If I were rating the content alone, I would probably give it three stars (slightly above average). If you can manage to get the entire set for cheap like I did, you're bound to find something that you like. Otherwise, stay away from IMP; this set is nice, but not that nice.

Expensive but delightful

I've been collecting the cards for the Mind-Body-Spirit kit for over a year now, and I love it. On the downside, it's going to end up costing me QUITE a lot--at $11/month, I'll easily have spent over $200 by the time my collection is complete. On the other hand, I was given the option to collect the cards faster and easier--three times as many, for about $17/month, and I opted against it. Why? Because half the joy is the monthly arrival of the new cards! If I got three times as many in a month, I wouldn't be able to linger over them the way I can with a smaller collection per delivery.

And I *do* linger over them. The photography is beautiful, and each topic gives you a comfortable introduction, or overview, of the topic, whether it's a particular astrological sign or the uses for lemon in healing and magic. If you want in-depth explanations of certain topics, this kit may not be for you. But if you appreciate having a beautiful, glossy-paged overview of scores of topics, giving you a better idea what you might want to research, consider this kit.

As a bonus? At least every other delivery comes with an extra treat of some sort--a CD of relaxing music, a collection of sandalwood incense, a chunk of amethyst, etc.--which has some relation to one of the cards in that delivery.

Bottom line? If you just want to save money and get a book, avoid this. But if you want a reminder approximately every month (I think it's more like every third week) of your interest in exploring ghosts, chakras, healing herbs, and many other areas of mind-body-spirt consciousness? Consider this beautifully arranged kit.

Nice Reference, but SO expensive...

After canceling my membership with IMP, I tried to find the set through an online auction. That's right. I said SET! There are so many inserts...a COMPLETE series would NEVER fit in ONE binder. Please do not be duped or allow yourself to be lied to by a second-hand seller claiming that ONE binder/"book" contains THE ENTIRE, COMPLETE set. The "Natural Healing" section alone can fill up one binder!
If a seller fails or refuses to list all sections, chapters and page insert numbers they are either a.) too ignorant to know what they have (not the orginal owner) or b.) extremely dishonest and hope you will buy one binder that they "think" is complete.
Please be VERY careful when dealing with these individuals.

So...why did I cancel my subscription to IMP? I was getting duplicate inserts and items in the mail AND I was being double charged. Another reviewer mentioned buying the set outright. If I had to do it over, that is probably what I would have done -but I never saw IMP advertise this option.
I hope this helps someone avoid the mistakes that I made...
