The best women's inspirational book I have read!

Wow... I mean, I cannot say enough amazing things about this book. It is engaging and really gets to your heart. It's the best women's inspirational book I have ever read and I would recommend it to women age 13 to 102!

Debbie doesn't just talk to you about God's promises to you, she gives you a glimpse into her life as a pastor's wife and how the same struggles she has faced, many of us do.

I actually got out my pen and highlighter and have written in the book on pages that really connected with me.

It's a book I will read again for sure!

Encouragement and Meat for your Faith

She Believes
She Believes challenges us to understand that what we believe affects every area of our lives. The book is full of the most basic things of our faith and what God says about them. Debbie does a great job of breaking down the things of faith into everyday life. This faith thing is real and it impacts everything.
I appreciate Debbie’s transparency about life, relationships, marriage, failures, success, church and her walk with God. By being upfront and honest about life’s struggles her words bring a bigger impact on my heart.
The chapters are short and full of truth. I enjoyed reading a chapter each day to soak in all the wisdom in each chapter.
Some of my favorite chapters included:
Chapter 2: Your Reflection is beautiful. It is so hard to wrap our minds around how beautiful we are in the eyes of our God. The truth of this chapter resonated with me.
Chapter 6: Prayer a Difference Maker. This was a very encouraging chapter to me. Matthew 21:22. “Prayer, open honest, expectant conversation with God.” I love this definition of prayer.
Debbie’s reminder that God is waiting to have a personal and real relationship with us was very encouraging. I loved the way she broke down what prayer means and how to go about it.
Chapter 12: Big Girls Do Cry. Psalm 56:8 “There are some words only tears can speak.” Sometimes we just need to cry. I enjoyed her imaginary walk with God to review the warehouse full of our tears. He is such a personal God, I often don’t keep this in mind enough.
She Believes is a book that will help anyone both grow in their faith and firm it up without a doubt . Take the time to read it and you will be encouraged and stronger!

A Must Read!

This was a very surprising book! It hit so many points and was so very relevant to the past and future thoughts and occurrences. I attended the Women's Conference for the first time this year and was impacted by the truth and the movement of the Holy Spirit. When God's people pray and are yearning for Him they will see and experience a movement. Though this is not a long book it is not one to read through quickly because you have to stop and think about what you've just read. I appreciate Pastor Debbie's heart and passion for women and treasure her transparency. She has such a sweet spirit and we've never even sat and had coffee (yet!)

Chef at New York's Les Halles and author of Bone in the Throat, Bourdain pulls no punches in this memoir of his years in the restaurant business. His fast-lane personality and glee in recounting sophomoric kitchen pranks might be unbearable were it not for two things: Bourdain is as unsparingly acerbic with himself as he is with others, and he exhibits a sincere and profound love of good food. The latter was born on a family trip to France when young Bourdain tasted his first oyster, and his love has only grown since. He has attended culinary school, fallen prey to a drug habit and even established a restaurant in Tokyo, discovering along the way that the crazy, dirty, sometimes frightening world of the restaurant kitchen sustains him. Bourdain is no presentable TV version of a chef; he talks tough and dirty. His advice to aspiring chefs: "Show up at work on time six months in a row and we'll talk about red curry paste and lemon grass. Until then, I have four words for you: 'Shut the fuck up.' " He disdains vegetarians, warns against ordering food well done and cautions that restaurant brunches are a crapshoot. Gossipy chapters discuss the many restaurants where Bourdain has worked, while a single chapter on how to cook like a professional at home exhorts readers to buy a few simple gadgets, such as a metal ring for tall food. Most of the book, however, deals with Bourdain's own maturation as a chef, and the culmination, a litany describing the many scars and oddities that he has developed on his hands, is surprisingly beautiful. He'd probably hate to hear it, but Bourdain has a tender side, and when it peeks through his rough exterior and the wall of four-letter words he constructs, it elevates this book to something more than blustery memoir. Must Read

I have worked in the restaurant industry my entire life, and I have to say that even if you've only waited tables for a month, or never worked in the industry at all, this is a must read. When people go out to dinner, they have a pleasant time, or they don't. They like their waiter, or they don't. They have strong opinions on the food, the smells, the d�cor, or they don't. Regardless of peoples experience in a dining room, there is a circus act going on continuously long before these people ever arrived, and it was in full effect when their order was placed, and it will continue after they have paid their bill and left. If you've ever wondered what the circus in the back of the house is like, then pick up this book.

The beans have now been spilled

Some years ago I had an interest in a restaurant along with two other partners. I also had a French family background with a deep appreciation of fine cuisine. I also have dined at Les Halles, his famous restaurant in New York. My partnership was to be "silent", that is, just kick in your share of the money and go away. In the first week of operation I was tapped to do dishes because the washer didn't show, wait tables for a similar reason etc. etc. For weeks we struggled to bring order and routine to the restaurant. So, the trap was well set. Fortunately, I was eventually able to sell back my share and jump clear of the unfolding disaster, but I wish I had read Anthony Bourdain's book first. All the best kept secrets of the restaurant business are revealed in this terrific book.

Everything he says about the business is spot-on and, once you read his book, which is written in the coarse language of a professional kitchen which adds color and authenticity, you will never look at a menu or see a restaurant the same way again.

I liked the muscular way he writes about food and I fully share his view that prissy concoctions of food with way too many ingredients that only stroke a chef's vanity have nothing to do with first class cooking. As he rightly points out, great cooking, as always, involves only the finest and freshest ingredients presented to their greatest advantage where less is more. As any artist will tell you, if you mix up all the colors of the pallet, the result will always be a muddy black.

The very best chapter, however, is about his going to Japan for the first time and seeing the famous Tokyo fish market which I remember seeing in the 1970's and feeling exactly the same way about. I also remember my first visit to Japan as the same hallucinatory experience which delighted every sense especially the quirky drinking habits of "salary men" or office workers after the day's work is done.

I suggest that you read the book and then visit his great restaurants...or the other way around. Both are a worthwhile experience.

Enlightened

After watching Bourdain on Kitchen Confidential, I wasn't entirely surprised at most of his extra curricular activities and general attitude that he chooses to share in this book. I DO,I believe, have a greater respect for the work and dedication that goes in to choosing this line of work and I believe I will probably be much more suspect of what might be happening behind the closed doors of the restaurants I go to. I am also more conscious of the things I use to cook with. Along with being more biographical, he balances the details with colorful stories of his life and behind the scenes "goings on" which holds your interest throughout. This is the first book of his that I have read and I would like to read another one! My problem is - which one should I choose.

About the Author
Ben Rothschild is a chess teacher. He is a chess expert, according to the rankings of the United States Chess Federation. At age 16, he was ranked 17th in the nation for his age. In 2006, his high school's chess team Niles North won the Illinois High School Association team chess state championships. The Illinois General Assembly honored them with a resolution passed in the House. In 2008, Niles North placed third at the High School Chess Nationals. Ben can play blindfold and calculate ten moves ahead. He has defeated multiple chess masters in tournaments. He is the founder of the nonprofit organization Chess Kings which offers after school classes, private lessons, and chess camps. He is also the author of over two hundred free chess instruction videos on YouTube. He has a Bachelor's Degree in History from the University of Illinois at Urbana. Creative, instructive, and quirky

I've worked in a few great tactics and puzzle books for beginners… I HIGHLY recommend this book as an all-encompassing guide to starting the game from square one. I've showed it to all my friends who are starting out.

This is not just pictures of a chess board, pick the best move (although it has those too); the book breaks down the game to the most fundamental patterns and themes, such as piece values and trading, checkmating, and how different pieces can get around the board. The exercises are creative and they work the patterns into your brain.

Highly recommended for those who want to have a fun introduction to the game. Also, there's rhymes :) Favorite section: getting good at knight moves.

good for beginners

I'm not a very good chess player but this book was very easy for me to understand. Each lesson is a picture of a chess board with pieces arranged in very particular ways. You learn to play chess by - wait for it - playing chess. I now understand a little bit more about the strategy behind moves, scoring, and some other stuff relevant to chess that i didn't know existed. I would recommend this book to anyone who doesn't know how to play chess but wants to learn.

Great book if you need a kick in the pants

This book reminds me of the old days when I was devouring everything written by Carlos Castaneda. The difference is that Mr. Ray doesn't talk about the actual experiences he's had with his spiritual teachers -- rather, he tells you a few things about how you should (and shouldn't) live your life.

While I have no problem with the principles Mr. Ray is teaching (I am somewhat familiar with most of it already), I cannot help being turned off by his writing style. I feel that Mr. Ray shows an emormous contempt for the lifestyle of the average person. He uses words like "whimp" and "wet paper bag" rather frequently. I find this arrogant and snotty.

Sure, it is easy to get negative feelings when you notice how some people live, but a person at an advanced level of spiritual achievment ought to have gone beyond such negativity.

Also he talks about how people and relationships are "dispensable". My spontaneous thought when I read this is: "This guy obviously never has had children!" If he'd had the experience of caring for a baby of his own, he wouldn't be able to talk so flippantly about others being "dispensable".

He talks a lot about how he fights his Ego -- and I cannot help but think: "Seems like the Ego is fighting itself".

If you want to read a very different book about spirituality, I strongly recommend "The Power of Now" -- also I urge you to read "Soul on Fire": Soul on Fire: A Transformational Journey from Priest to Shaman by Peter Calhoun. The latter book takes a shamanic approach to spirituality, but unlike Mr. Rays' book it is devoid of arrogance and doesn't talk down to you. (I hope Mr. Ray will forgive me for recommending a competitor!)

This book gives a general overview of spiritual principles but could have included detailed information as to how they work, why they work and more importantly, specific methods of applying them to the reader's life in a practical way. If you are looking for a mere introduction then you will like this book, but if you want real details (that is, a more "HOW TO", hands-on,life-altering approach to spirituality) I suggest the following books: YOU CAN HEAL YOUR LIFE by Louise Hay,THE POWER IS WITHIN YOU by Louise Hay, MANIFEST YOUR DESTINY by Wayne Dyer and THE DIRECT PATH by Andrew Harvey (read in that order)as a good place to start. The techniques offered in the DIRECT PATH will keep you busy for years. The Metta technique described in that book is very effective. Peace and love!

29 Practical Tips for Living a More Spiritual & Powerful Life

I first learned about James Ray a year before his association with The Secret book and Law of Attraction principles. I knew he had been on Larry King and was known as a Life Coach who talked about prosperity and the law of attraction. I also became aware that he was into spirituality and considered himself a practical mystic. After I wrote my own book on the Law of Attraction in 2007, Beyond the Secret: Spiritual Power and the Law of Attraction, I was interested to see that this book by James Ray included the words Spiritual Power in his sub-title. So, I purchased this book curious to learn more about him and his views.

First, I got the book at Barnes & Nobel (sorry Amazon) and paid the full price of $24.95. Considering the thin size of the book I was a bit shocked at the price. It is only 140 pages long and books that go for that price are usually 250 - 300 or more pages in length! But, I wanted to see what he said, so I purchased it anyway. (By the way, Amazon.com is cheaper and to be honest I would have felt best if I had bought it here as a used or "like new" book for a lot less money).

Price aside, I was pleased with the content. The book is outlined as a series of 29 tips with a three to four pages of recommendations about each tip. Tips from the Table of Contents include: Transcend the Ego, Less is More, Be Unique, Just Be, Find Comfort in Discomfort, and so on. What I liked best about these tips was how congruent they were with what I also consider to be a practial approach to spirituality. Ray's advice is full of wisdom and insight that can only be ascertained by someone who is attempting to actually live a spiritual life. It let me know that Ray is someone who is walking the walk and not just talking the talk. I say this because as this book by Ray reveals, he seems in alignment with principles that go way beyond the hype and materialistic view that was the main presentation of The Secret. Hey, I understand, it was a hugely successful book and anyone who was included in it got a marketing boost. It's just I believe you will discover what James Ray is really all about by reading this book, which is much more in alignment with the teachings in my own book, Beyond the Secret, which states that the "real secret" in life has nothing to do with the law of attraction, which can be used in a selfish, or selfless way. The "real secret" has to do with what kind of person you become while you are here. Practical Spirituality and James Ray give you that kind of guidance. It was a pleasure to learn more about him. And a gift to read this powerful and rewarding book.
