A treasure of a book
By Nika
Any serious realistic portrait painter should avail themselves of this book. The illustrations are superb in quality and it has a lot of hard-to-find drawings of this great master. Nicolai Fechin is truly one of the most significant and under-appreciated painters of the 20th Century.

Perfection in Art Book Publication!
By Dennis E. Pies
This is as perfect as a book publication can be. The book itself is a work of art. Each of Fechin's drawings is reproduced to perfection. It is important to note that the seller from New Mexico has kept the cultural influence that this great artist made while in Taos alive. The present day Art Museum of Taos was at one time Fechin's studio. He also made beautiful highly skilled wood carvings as part of the architectural structure of the house that are so well preserved. Thank you for publishing and making this book available to honor the greatness of a Master. If in Taos be sure to visit.

Good resource to add to any information security awareness program
By Ben Rothke
Security awareness is a vital part of information security. Just how important is it? In September, the 10-day SANS Security Awareness Summit 2014 will cover every aspect of the topic.

For those that want to get an appreciation for the topic but can’t make it to Dallas for the Summit, Security Awareness: Applying Practical Security in Your World is a good resource for the reader that wants both an understanding of the theoretical awareness issues, and how to practically address them.

Author Mark Ciampa is a computer science professor Western Kentucky University with an expansive background on the topic.

The book has an awareness focus for Windows users. The reader is expected to be somewhat technical, and relatively comfortable with using Windows tools.

For those looking for a mid-level reference on the topic, a book that’s not too basic, and also not so broad, Security Awareness: Applying Practical Security in Your World is a good resource to add to any information security awareness program.

I traded this in to Amazon because it helped me pass my CSI class with flying colors so, I didn't need it anymore. But if your going into the computer sciences, I definitely recommend. With technology expanding so rapidly, we tend to forget that we need to protect the information that we share. I love that there are tons of scenarios in this book that relate to today.

From Publishers Weekly
"Fear of working-class violence," the author comments in the preface, "explains much of what has been called progressive reform." In this excellent illustrated survey of American labor radicalism and political reaction from the end of Reconstruction to the end of World War I, Painter concentrates largely on the struggle between "partisans of democracy" and "protectors of hierarchy" during a 42-year period when the country was evolving from an agrarian to an urban industrial society. Her major theme is the public's identification of organized labor with incendiary radicalism. She notes that the years of greatest unrest inspired ever more violent "red scares" during which the restoration of law and order meant using whoever could be defined as "reds" as the scapegoats. The author is a history professor at the University of North Carolina, at Chapel Hill.

From Library Journal
This book offers general readers and students a fresh introduction to the United States during the Gilded Age and the progressive era. Painter has relied on the latest biographies and monographs to write her descriptive synthesis. She gives attention to blacks, women, and immigrants as well as the industrial and political elite, combining social, economic, and political history. The author concludes that the strong pressures of the agricultural and industrial laborers forced the passage of progressive reforms in the early 20th century. Painter's narrative joins other worthwhile surveys of the era, e.g., S.D. Cashman's America in the Gilded Age ( LJ 12/15/83) and Ray Ginger's standard treatment Age of Excess (1975, rev. ed.). Review
“The turmoil that attended America's shift from a rural, agrarian society to an urban, industrial one, described with a highly readable combination of scholarly thoroughness and stylistic verve. . . . A consistently engrossing, occasionally irreverent, always smoothly written history of America's painful entry into the modern age.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“A vivid portrayal of people's history with the politics left in. With analytical cohesiveness, intellectual grasp and wit, Painter succeeds not only in integrating issues in Afro-American and women's history with the whole but also in relating the role and presence of the modern state to the trends in ordinary people's lives. . . . A gripping and forceful narrative.” (Nancy F. Cott, Yale University)

“Lucid and compelling. . . . The first general treatment of this era that does full justice to the struggles of working people. It will provide future historians with a good model for how to do narrative synthesis 'from the bottom up.'
” (George M. Fredrickson, Stanford University)

balanced, evocative history of a time of great upheaval
By Robert J. Crawford
If you think that the present era is bad, all you need to do is read about the Reconstruction to see America at its absolute worst. This book covers the close of Reconstruction, into what has long been portrayed as an era of explosive "progressivism", but it is a kind of people's history as well as covering the leaders. The result is a brilliant and dense tableau by a first rate historian and writer.

At the beginning of the era, the government has been thoroughly corrupted by the "robber barons", who have essentially turned the Republicans into defenders of capital over labor: they essentially made it illegal, in some cases even treasonous, to strike or even speak out, followed by executions on trumped up charges after violent confrontations. To the 1880s, as the industrial revolution was gaining momentum and resulting in vast fortunes and power, the conditions of work were often of an unimaginable brutality: 7-day work weeks, child labor, virtual imprisonment of laborers in shabby industrial complexes at dirt-low pay, etc. Unions were not recognized as legitimate representatives of labor and hence not allowed to negotiate collectively, workers could not feed their families, and education was largely unavailable. With all three branches of the government completely in the pocket of the "capitalists", the working class felt as if it was disenfranchised and without any means of effecting change. Then there were terrible economic downturns that thrown millions into the streets without any government social safety net.

The result was a build-up of anger that reached revolutionary proportions, ready to burst forth in the most violent confrontations - industrial, racially motivated, etc. - that America had seen since the Civil War. While there were many anarchists (later tainted by terrorism association) and socialists, many of their demands were pragmatic, including an 8-hour work day, the end of child labor, the legalization of union representation, and higher pay. The author tells all of the principal stories associated with these incidents, such as the Haymarket bombing or the Railroad Strike of 1877.

Add to this the emergence of a cadre of reformers - suffragettes, muckraking journalists, union and social activists engaging in fundamental experiments, even some politicians - and the mix became extremely volatile. What is so interesting about this book is the modest assessment of the end results that the author portrays. In other words, beyond some pretty basic accomplishments, the progressive era's political momentum in her view was dissipated first by the Great War and then by the prosperity that followed until the Great Depression. This was a great surprise to me, though it was apparently enough to ward off violent revolution as the middle class expanded to enjoy the fruits of the American dream.

The book is written in a beautifully fluid and elegant style, honing in on details and mini-biographies. At times, it is a bit pedantic at an undergraduate level (I did not need to be informed, for example, that the Ottomans were Turks!), but this is a minor criticism. This is a splendid introduction with a strong point of view and many delightful surprises. Personally, I was fascinated by Frances Willard, who gave the name to a nearby school in my conservative home town: a suffragette and advocate of prohibition (they were intimately linked), she was also a lover of women at a time when such things were never discussed and even lacked an adequate vocabulary to describe it.

Warmly recommended, This is a masterpiece.

Accessible Introduction to an Important Time in US History
By Robert E. Black
I was looking for a book that covered post-reconstruction to about WWI as the Cambridge History Series is currently lacking. This is book does a good job covering the political, economic and especially the social factors that drove that era. I have to admit I am not an expert on this period of history and am also going to be reading additional books that focus more on the economics (capitalists). I will leave it to others to comment on the accuracy, proper themes, etc, but this book does seem to give a good feel of how people lived in this time frame. With a few exceptions, I didn't find the book particularly biased to the left or right and consider myself moderately conservative. Although some people consider this portion of history to be boring, I found it (at least this book) quite interesting as the foundations of our modern society really start here in many aspects.

The awkward details behind America's rise to prominence
By J. Grattan
This book is a commendable look at a very contentious period in US history. At the start of this period, the nation, even so-called radical Republicans, had lost tolerance for Reconstruction, essentially turning the South over to the Redeemers, that is, the old oligarchy, which essentially restored ante-bellum race relations. The story of this period involves far more than simply the dramatic rise of large enterprises and super-rich entrepreneurs. Of concern to this author are the social divides in the nation that revolved around agrarian vs. industrial interests, economic class, political effectiveness, religion, mode of production, reform vs. standpattism, native born vs. immigrants, ethnicity, and race. Farmers, artisans, and laborers usually found themselves on the wrong side of many of those divisions; attempts at amelioration were often inadequate and fleeting. The US joined the Europeans in carving up the world through imperialistic ventures based on an ideology of Anglo-Saxon racial superiority. The US certainly emerged after WWI as the world's dominate power, but most of the cracks in the foundation of American society remained.

The author's principal focus is on the so-called "labor issue," as the elites of the times referred to it, that is, workers and their jobs and actions in the context of the larger society. The nature of work underwent vast changes in the decades after the Civil War. Much of independent artisanship was swallowed up by the de-skilled, corporate machine-tending mode of production. Easily replaced and therefore essentially powerless, workers found it extremely difficult to counter the squeezing of their wages to subsistence levels in a time of over all deflation with significant economic downturns occurring at least once a decade. Given the levels of desperation and anger, it is not surprising that the era was filled with numerous, prolonged employer-employee confrontations. Denying the legitimacy of such worker actions, conservatives maintained that all Americans had an "identity of interests" in an hierarchical economic order controlled from the top by business elites.

All manner of movements and actions were untaken to counter various aspects of the undemocratic control of status-quo elites. Third-party movements such as the Greenback Party, Henry George followers, the Populists, and the Socialists advocated for such changes as relaxed monetary policies and silver coinage, governmental regulation or ownership of utilities and railroads, reduced tariffs, restrictions on child and female labor and maximum hours, direct election of Senators, etc. Labor organizations from the National Labor Union, the Knights of Labor, the American Federation of Labor (AFL), to the International Workers of the World (IWW) ranged widely in their approaches to effect reform from increased political participation, forming producer and consumer cooperatives, only bargaining for wages and worker conditions, to forming one big Union to run US factories in the interest of the working class. Notable violent confrontations of the era were the Great Railway Strike of 1877, the 1886 Haymarket Square bombing, the Carnegie Homestead Strike of 1892, and the Pullman Strike of 1894, all of which started as strikes or worker protests but were quickly escalated to the level of being national panics through the actions of employers and authorities.

Successes in these various approaches, especially in the 19th century, were quite limited and impermanent. As the author notes, fear of even greater reactions from the working class induced elite-controlled legislatures and Congress to offer such palliatives as workplace regulations or the toothless Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890. Of course, the conservative judiciary either invalidated the legislation or used it against working people, such as using Sherman antitrust to declare labor organizations as illegal conspiracies, prohibited from actions by judge-issued injunctions. As the author indicates, the "red scare" phenomenon, that is, demonizing individuals or groups as communists, anarchists, syndicalists, etc, began in earnest with the Haymarket affair, well before the Bolshevik revolution in 1917. With such characterizations, all manner of suppression is then justified from the use of armed force, both private and governmental, even the use of federal troops, to using the judicial system as a means of giving legitimacy to harsh retaliations, such as the hanging of several anarchists indirectly associated with Haymarket.

The working class and labor organizations hardly represented a uniform front, much of the split being on a personal level. Native-born Brits and some German and Irish, many of whom were craftsmen, regarded themselves as superior to the flood of immigrants from Italy, Eastern Europe, and Russia who found work in factories. Not only did their place in the work order define them, but religion - Protestant vs. Catholic, political affiliation - Republican vs. Democrat, and personal habits - drinking for one, separated them. Moreover, labor organizations operated from different sets of principles. The AFL was exclusionary, permitting only unions of tradesmen, while the Knights were an inclusive, industrial union, accepting all workers. Peculiarly, Terrence Powderly, head of the Knights, eschewed both strikes and political action, while Samuel Gompers, head of the AFL, preferred direct bargaining with companies with no outside aid or interference. These ethnic differences dovetailed with endemic racial biases to justify American interventions in Central America, the Philippines, and the Caribbean beginning with the Spanish-American conflict in 1898, but continuing through the period.

As the author points out, the first decade of the 1900s was fairly prosperous pushing remnants of the turmoil of the last decade to the side, though labor unions had gained no greater standing, still being subjected to adverse reactions from all quarters. In some cases, more notice was being taken of the economic excesses that continued from the last decade. An active press reported on the most flagrant abuses of giant trusts, leading to selective enforcement of the Sherman Antitrust Act. For example, both J. P. Morgan's holding company of railroads, Northern Securities Company, and John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil, among others, were forced to disband into smaller units. In addition, the IWW and the socialists were gaining a significant following among workers and the AFL was emerging from political indifference. Given this persistent level of agitation, another downturn in 1907 forced many social and political elites, including Pres. Theodore Roosevelt, to realize that more vigorous reform efforts were needed if American society was not to come apart.

The Progressive era driven by the impetus of middle-class professionals was actually rather short-lived. Pres. Woodrow Wilson, surpassing his conservative, Southern roots sponsored some legislation favorable to workers, including the Clayton Act that supposedly exempted labor unions from being considered anti-competitive combinations. The conservative side of the labor movement, that is, the AFL, supported the War effort and was likewise granted recognition in the nation's places of work. But, as so often happens in America, when the unions attempted to extend their gains after the WWI, in particular by organizing US Steel, the forces of reaction rose in vigorous opposition. IWW offices were raided with members being beaten or killed and all unions were painted with the red brush of communism. The convenient accommodations necessitated by wartime were quickly forgotten. Complete corporate hegemony had been reestablished by the early 1920s.

This book is a clear repudiation of any notion that the rise of the US to world prominence in the early 20th century was one long progressive, glorious rise that as a matter of course benefitted all citizens. More realistically, this book demonstrates that in so many areas of American society that the industrialism that emerged in the decades after the Civil War resulted in intense struggles for broad swaths of the American population depending on what side of the class, race, etc divides one was located. While significant modifications have been made to the capitalistic order over ensuing decades, what is remarkable is how much remains the same.

In the year 2010, laissez-faire ideas regarding business are in ascendance. The ability of financial and corporate elites to largely control the economy has hardly diminished. Worker organizations have been under assault for decades, resulting in the kind of inequality found in the era of the robber barons. If anything, the corporate regime is even more consolidated and integrated into society now than in the early 1900s. The use of the media and other institutions of "information" are so much more sophisticated than before resulting in scarcely noticeable "persuasion." Evidence for the widespread acceptance of the corporate order is that the sizeable, focused alternative movements in the early decades of industrialism, like the Knights, the Populists, the Socialists, etc, have not been replicated since WWII, except for the college kids' protests of the 60s which was more scattered and spontaneous than coherent - more stylish than substantive. Those earlier generations would have never accepted so passively the undermining of their well-being from the totality of such corporate acts as reckless financial dealings, gratuitous downsizing, shipping jobs overseas, allowing in millions on visa programs, and the like. In fact, the corporate-political order that perpetrates such is validated time and again in national elections. This book is well worth reading to get a more complete picture of what underlay the rise of what a recent author referred to as the American "super-economy."

English Literature: A Very Short Introduction, by Jonathan Bate

A renowned critic, biographer, and Shakespeare scholar, Jonathan Bate provides in this Very Short Introduction a lively and engaging overview of the literature that Jorge Luis Borges called "the richest in the world." From the medieval "Hymn of Caedmon" to George Orwell's "Why I Write," from Jane Austen to Ian McEwan, and from Winnie the Pooh to Dr. Johnson, this brilliant, compact survey stretches across the centuries, exploring the major literary forms (poetry, novel, drama, essay and more), the many histories and theories of the very idea of literature, and the role of writers in shaping English, British, and post-imperial identities. Bate illuminates the work of Chaucer, Shakespeare, Wordsworth, Dickens, and many other major figures of English literature. He looks at the Renaissance, Romanticism, and Modernism, at the birth of the novel and the Elizabethan invention of the idea of a national literature, and at the nature of writing itself. Ranging from children's literature to biography, this is an indispensable guide and an inspiration for anyone interested in England's magnificent literary heritage.

English Literature: Questions for Consideration and Discussion

  • What have been the key texts for creating our images of Britain? Jane Austen for our idea of village life, Dickens for London, Hardy for rural England...?
  • Do works of children’s literature date more quickly than adult ones?
  • Is it useful to make a distinction between “popular” literary genres--detective story, science fiction, spy thriller, chick lit--and the “literary” novel?
  • What should be the limits to our definition of literature? What sort of literary qualities can we find in non-fictional genres such as the essay, the travel book, the history book, even a work of political theory or natural history?
  • Is our sense of the role of poetry now confined to the private sphere (love poetry, nature poetry, the poetry of personal memory) whereas it used to be a more public form (political poetry, satire, war poetry)?
  • Is there a tension between seeing Shakespeare’s plays in performance and reading them as literature?
  • Review
While exploring towering works, Bate remins us that literature can also be terrific fun. Christopher Hirst. The Independent

    Contextualising text
    By Jon Chambers
There's a lot of ground to cover in Eng Lit: 'sweeping across two millennia and every literary genre', as the inside flap promises. For a while, it seems as though the need to cram everything in might be the book's undoing - even though at 167pp it's one of the longer Shorts. Such worries are premature: analysis comfortably outweighs potted literary history.

For me, it isn't the chapter on Shakespeare (Bate's specialism) that forms the book's highlight, but the last two, on the novel and on multicultural English. In the first of these, the development of the 'stream of consciousness' in such novels as Ulysses and Orlando is considered in relation to recent work in brain science. As with The Genius of Shakespeare, therefore, Bate shows a willingness to look beyond the confines of his own subject in order to understand it more fully. And in his concluding chapter, entitled The Englishness of English Literature?, Bate examines a diversity that has characterised the literature of the British Isles since even the pre-modern, pre-mass immigration era, with its sharp political, religious and social divisions.

Witty as well as thought-provoking, the book is itself literary (I noted homage to EM Forster and Blake, and doubtless missed other instances) in a way that will probably appeal to those who are 'in' without annoying those who aren't. It is also wide-ranging, up to date and perceptive (Coleridge and Hazlitt are seen as the originators of opposing 'formalist' and 'historicist' schools of criticism). With so much to commend it, we might even excuse its rather sniffy attitude to the on-line review - the 'free-for-all ... in which everyone is a critic'. Bate does, after all, concede that such electronic chat may just be an extension of the democratisation that began in the C18 coffee house.

Ultimately, therefore, one of the more inspired and inspiring VSIs.

    Interesting reading.

The author assumes a knowledge of English literature, while summarizing periods of English literature.
I am not sure who the audience is supposed to be. It is interesting reading but not what I expected.

    For fans of the game
    By Parka
[[VIDEOID:40918b8843fd6251cf31bf72845dfd8e]]Wow, the producer Kenichiro Takaki is really unabashed at the selling point of Senran Kagura series of games. On page two, in case you missed it, they even printed the words "BOOBS" in big bold red fonts. That's the highlight of this book.

This is a 240-page paperback that's has been translated by Udon Entertainment into English from the original Japanese edition 閃乱カグラシリーズ 公式イラスト集 -少女達の軌跡-.

This book features art for the following games:

    Senran Kagura Skirting Shadows
    Senran Kagura Crimson Girls
    Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus
    Senran Kagura NewWave
    Senran Kagura Bon Appetit
    Senran Kagura 2 Deep Crimson

The other selling point are the wonderful illustrations included. The pages are filled with beautiful anime style illustrations of the female ninjas. There are character designs, funny scenarios and pin-ups. The character designs are awesome. I like how dynamic the characters look.

This book is definitely not safe for work. Although all the important bits are covered up, there are still a lot of touchy-feely pieces, and of course more than a handful of those teasing almost-nude illustrations.

Right at the end are interviews with Righteous Boobage Artist Nan Yaegashi and Righteous Boobage Producer Kenichiro Takaki (that's what they call themselves). Basically they talk about what it's like to make a game that features so much boobs. Some parts are serious, like really talking about the IP and game making, while others parts are on character designs.

There are character profiles for the ninjas across the different games in the last few pages. Also included is an encyclopedia that explains all the terms, phrases and jokes from the past games. I even learned a new Japanese word "bakunyuu" that literally means "explosive breasts".

I can see how fans of the game will be delighted with this book.

finally an official US art book that i can get my hands on
    By DEATHWISH1988
im thankful for marvelous for releasing this awesome visual art collection of senran kagura games.

now what its in this design books are some offecial art , concept - ruff drawings - bonus material art and some softcore porn cuz its an ecchi show after all so please keep in mind to be careful around litlle children or people who might get offended by some the pictures .

with that said this a good way to treat us senran kagura fans as it has arts from Burst - Bon apatite - new wave - SV and abit of 2 crimson but sadly not EV .

overall it has a very good mix of art from various characters to be fair as the characters are interesting and like them not for the ecchi part of the show but for being a badass action girls with different fighting art styles and character tropes .

to bad that Estival Vs didn't make the cut as i would have loved some Renka pictures , but hopfully they wouls realease an english EV design book as well .

for this art book if your itching for some senran kagura art this a wonderful book for fans , ecchi lovers and gaming fan alike

note there are also a wonderful interview section at the end of the book with the series creator and artist also that is amusing to read , as well as some ultra cute and funny comic strip section of each game end chapter that really made this book much worthwhile .

im craving for more US released SK US art books in the future and hopefully with US release of EV they might do one for that game ( Gotta get me some Renka pictures ) .

Beyond Recovery: Nonduality and the Twelve Steps, by Fred Davis

BEYOND RECOVERY offers the tools that we can use to move on from mere abstinence to the natural freedom that is our true nature. Rupert Spira writes in the foreword, 'Beyond Recovery's real quality lies in the honest, humorous and warm-hearted ways in whichFred explores and exposes the complex patterns of avoidance and denial that characterise the resisting, seeking self and the non-judgmental way in which he describes it. Drawing on numerous examples from his own colourful life, he speaks with passion and humility of a path that started for him as an obsessive search for happiness in the acquisition of objects, relationships and states, evolved through addiction, recovery, spiritual seeking and self-enquiry, and continues in an ever-deepening surrender to the undeniable, unnamable reality of what eternally is.'

~SCOTT KILOBY, author, Natural Rest for Addiction: A Revolutionary Way to Recover through Presence.

"IF THE TRUE MEASURE OF A BOOK is to be found in the perfume that remains behind when all the words have been forgotten then, for Beyond Recovery, it is this quality of honesty, openness and surrender which communicates itself in the words and between them, administering not just to the mind but to the background of Awareness."
~RUPERT SPIRA author, Presence: The Art of Peace and Happiness

"THIS BOOK BY FRED DAVIS extends the culture of [Twelve Step Recovery] and contributes to the current shift in Western civilization, which is one from attending to religion, philosophy, art, history, music, and science as pointers to our true nature, to true nature itself. In other words, it is a shift toward attending to attention, or to the one attending, rather than to the creative outcomes of that kind of attention."
~JERRY KATZ, editor, One: Essential Writings on Nonduality

"THIS IS NOT A BOOK ABOUT RECOVERY. It is a beautiful, profound book on Nonduality. I love its simplicity and honesty, its directness, its clarity. Rather than mere recovery from drugs or alcoholism, this is a great guide of recovery from our addiction to misery, our addiction to patterns of suffering and delusion, in one word, our addiction to the mind and the dreams of separation from Oneness."
~PETRICA VERDES, translator of Ilie Cioara's books

    From the Author
THE ADDICTION THAT BEYOND RECOVERY really addresses is the addiction to a separate self, a make-believe entity who's carving out its own destiny with or without the help of a Higher Power. The book was begun as a "bridge book" between the Twelve Step and Nondual communities, something I'd been working on in my mind--and in my community--for years. However, what it really attempts to bridge is the apparent gulf between organized insanity--what we call 'normalcy'--and the great, boundless ocean of still, silent, causeless bliss that is our True Nature. We can come to know this for our very own selves. I hope you'll join me in this ongoing exploration. I hope you'll tell someone else about it. Together we can bring a new peace, and new hope for survival to our planet--and to all One of us.
~FRED DAVIS, editor, Awakening Clarity and Beyond-Recovery.org.

    From the Inside Flap
BEYOND RECOVERY IS A "BRIDGE BOOK" for those of us who've found ourselves seeking a deeper level of spirituality. We may be recovering from addiction, our war with life, or both. One way or another, we've come to notice that the spiritual viewpoints from which we've been operating are not taking us where we intuitively feel we are being drawn. We know we need "something else," but we're not sure what, why, or how. Beyond Recovery will help to answer all of those questions, and then suggest many more.

    Beyond Fred
    By Jerry Katz
Beyond Recovery is intended for people who are abstinent or currently in a 12-step program, though it is not a replacement for such a program. However, Rupert Spira says in the foreword that "most of us are addicts to compulsive thinking." Others have said, "We're all in recovery." Those statements help those who have never had gross addictions, understand those who have. But let's look at AA for what it is.

    What Alcoholics Anonymous is

Alcoholics Anonymous is a program of recovery from alcoholism and the restoration of responsibility so that one may function effectively in the world, or, as Adyashanti might say, "Dream well." Dreaming well could mean that one lives well, lives a good life, is a fine citizen, family person, and member of the community, and that life includes remaining sober, taking on-going personal inventory, and yielding to the will of a higher power.

    Enter nonduality

However, the culture of AA does not include a teaching that would look into the dream or the dreamer. Fred calls the addiction to the dream, or to compulsive thinking, or to our small self, our "secret addiction." Nonduality takes care of that. He writes, "We're trying to find out the truth about ourselves; to unloose blind patterns; to unravel and unwind our story; and to begin dismantling the dream of me-ness from within the dream itself."

    A cultural shift

So this book by Fred Davis extends the culture of AA and contributes to the current shift in Western civilization which is one from attending to religion, philosophy, art, history, music, and science as pointers to our true nature, to true nature itself. In other words, it is a shift toward attending to attention, or to the one attending, rather than to the creative outcomes of that kind of attention.

Science and the liberal arts do not lose attention, significance, or importance in this shift. Rather, they become enhanced as people have less need to defend, protect, and therefore distort and stifle them. That is, identification with a creative work is released as attention turns and moves toward the one identifying. While AA restores responsibility, nonduality looks at the one who would be responsible.

Fred is a player in this shift. He knows what's happening and writes, "The greatest change in history is happening right now, in our lifetimes."

Hallmark of a good nonduality book

Fred has achieved the hallmark of a good nonduality book, which is that it communicates the essential teaching of nonduality to just about any reader regardless of the book's dominant perspective. That hallmark is evident in works whose dominant themes are quantum theory, neuroscience, ecology, acting, education, psychotherapy, Western philosophy, art, yoga, aikido, haiku, ecofeminism, film, and religious studies.

As a collector and organizer of nondual perspectives, allow me to announce that with this small flurry of books on recovery by Fred Davis, Scott Kiloby, and the upcoming one from Gary Nixon (and there are others prior to this flurry), we now have an official new nondual perspective, the one of recovery.

    Effectiveness and grace

The bottom line, though, is how effective is this nondual take on the 12-step program of AA? Fred writes, "I do know that what I present here is effective in helping others. This is not mere theory; it is field proven." It better be. Like others with severe addiction to alcohol, Fred's life was hellish for a long time and he describes it in detail.

Yet, he says, "Becoming addicted, in a bizarre way, is the greatest thing most of us ever did." ... "[Recovery] has primed us for approaching enlightenment. Recovery has given us one new life already, and now we discover that it has readied us for another! Who could imagine that people such as we could come into such great bounty and beauty? Who could imagine such grace as this?"

    Beyond recovery

Fred says, "Nonduality could be called the philosophy of not asking the universe to do anything it's not already doing. In this tradition we're not applying for change. We're applying only for awareness and acceptance."

However, he says, "I don't recommend Nonduality for getting people clean and sober and abstinent, and I don't recommend recovery as the best path to awakening. ... Addiction is a closed, self-affirming system. But recovery can become something of a closed system as well; it's quite circular. That's not a criticism, it's an observation. Addiction and recovery are yin and yang, two sides of the very same coin. Our goal here is to move our view beyond all opposites, including those two."

Fred Davis opens a big gate door with this book, so that brave ones from the world of recovery may further pursue their adventure of inquiry within a thoroughly described context of nonduality.

    Hallelujah!
    By anothergirl
Words can't express how overjoyed I was to find a book that explained the transition happening in my life. This book was like a beacon just at the right moment. It was validating to know someone not only understood what I was experiencing but had been through it and was writing about it! I went from feeling like I was living a secret life in the fellowship to understanding that I was being drawn "beyond" recovery and not towards somewhere dark and dangerous. For someone with long-term 12-step recovery it's a godsend to have a non-dual perspective of the 12 steps, but one doesn't have to be in 12-step recovery or even familiar with it to benefit from this book. Aside from this being the only book I know of that serves as a bridge from recovery to non-duality, the next best thing about it is its directness. I've read tons of non-duality/advaita material. When it comes from the heart it's alive and a true joy to read and can even penetrate some long-held beliefs. Full of aha moments. When it doesn't it's not bad, it's just more of an intellectual exercise. This is one of those books that I wish were longer because I didn't want it to end. It's definitely from the heart.

Between the 12 step program and nonduality
    By Scott Kiloby
As the author of Living Realization: Your Present Experience...As It Is, I feel there are few, if any, books which cohesively bridge the seeming gap between the 12 step program and nonduality.

Beyond Recovery clarifies both the relative difference between these two and also, paradoxically, how each can be about the same spiritual awakening. I truly wish I would have had this book when first making the move from 12 step to nonduality. It would have saved a bit of confusion. Bravo to Fred for writing with such clarity, specifically on his nondual look at the steps and also on how awakening out of the story of 'me' is only a beginning, but that the journey thereafter is not about seeking.I hope 12-steppers reading this review really get the delicious paradox of that and find themselves picking up this book.

Addiction tends to keep us seeking, even if we are seeking recovery. Fred's book has the ability to really bring the timeless wisdom that freedom is in the here and now into the 12 step movement. Great book. I loved it.

    Henry Jenkins at Authors@Google (video)

Henry Jenkins“s pioneering work in the early 1990s promoted the idea that fans are among the most active, creative, critically engaged, and socially connected consumers of popular culture and that they represent the vanguard of a new relationship with mass media. Though marginal and largely invisible to the general public at the time, today, media producers and advertisers, not to mention researchers and fans, take for granted the idea that the success of a media franchise depends on fan investments and participation.

Bringing together the highlights of a decade and a half of groundbreaking research into the cultural life of media consumers, Fans, Bloggers, and Gamers takes readers from Jenkins's progressive early work defending fan culture against those who would marginalize or stigmatize it, through to his more recent work, combating moral panic and defending Goths and gamers in the wake of the Columbine shootings. Starting with an interview on the current state of fan studies, this volume maps the core theoretical and methodological issues in Fan Studies. It goes on to chart the growth of participatory culture on the web, take up blogging as perhaps the most powerful illustration of how consumer participation impacts mainstream media, and debate the public policy implications surrounding participation and intellectual property.

    Review

“Jenkins is one of us: a geek, a fan, a popcult packrat. He's also an incisive and unflinching critic. His affection for the subject and sharp eye for 'what it all means' are an unbeatable combination. This is fascinating, engrossing and enlightening reading.”
-Cory Doctorow, author of Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town and co-editor of Boing Boing

“Jenkins persuasively argues in favor of taking the fan’s perspective in analyzing television-- and this is the cornerstone of the new turn in Cultural Studies.”

Fans, Blogueros y Videojuegos: La cultura de la colaboración
    By Cristian Guajardo Garcia

Aparte de Textual Poachers, y Convergence Culture, Henry Jenkins ha publicado: "From Barbie to Mortal Kombat: Gender and Computer Games", "Rethinking Media Change: The Aesthetics of Transition. Media in transition", "The Wow Climax: Tracing the Emotional Impact of Popular Culture" entre otros.

Los dejo con un vídeo en el cual Jenkins va a Google a conversar sobre los cambios culturales y su libro "Convergence Culture".'

Offers insights on several topics in modern TV and video gaming
    By Andrew D. Oram
I read Jenkins's more significant book "Convergence Culture" and found this one a useful follow-up. I don't find any single, overarching point in Fans, Bloggers, and Gamers (as other reviewers pointed out, it's a collection of distinct essays spanning several years) but as I went along, I felt that I got a deeper understanding of some interesting topics in culture, and media. For instance, what drives people to reinterpret TV shows and movies through fan fiction? Do gamers take the violence in games seriously? How can media makers create better shows by involving their audiences?

The politics around violence in video games are still active. So what Jenkins wrote about these games and Columbine massacre are worth reading, although I thought he was a bit defensive and didn't weight both sides' arguments fairly.
