In the Old Sun, by Hermann Hesse

One of Herman Hesse's earliest novels, In the Old Sun (In der Alten Sonne) was completed in 1908. The book, out of print in English for a hundred years, was originally published before the novels that were to make Hesse famous in the decades after World War II. The poorhouse derelicts of Gerbersau (Hesse's boyhood town of Cawl) appear to have walked out of the fictional world of Gottfried Keller, whose collection of short stories, The People of Seldwyla, was a favorite of Hesse's. The antics of Hrlin, the bankrupt manufacturer, and of Heller, a malicious and lazy former rope maker, are both humorous and poignant. Coyote Canyon Press is proud to bring back into print this "lost novel" by Hermann Hesse.

About the Author
When this German novelist, poet, and essayist publicly denounced the savagery and hatred of World War I, he was considered a traitor. He moved to Switzerland where he eventually became a naturalized citizen. He warned of the advent of World War II, predicting that cultureless efficiency would destroy the modern world. His theme is the conflict between the elements of a person's dual nature and the problem of spiritual loneliness. His first novel, Peter Camenzind, was published in 1904. His masterpiece, Death and the Lover (1930), contrasts a scholarly abbot and his beloved pupil, who leaves the monastery for the adventurous world. Steppenwolf (1927), a European bestseller, was published when defeated Germany had begun to plan for another war. It is the story of Haller, who recognizes in himself the blend of the human and wolfish traits of the completely sterile scholarly project. Hesse won the Nobel Prize in 1946. During the 1960s Hesse became a favorite writer of the counter culture, especially in the United States, though his critical reputation has never equaled his popularity. Hermann Hesse died in 1962.

Excellent novella
By Ed HikerTraveler
In the tenor of Hesse's "Knulp", this novella shares the tale of the origin of the Sun Brothers, a group of old age pensioners and their various life tales. Each brings a different worldview and personal demeanor to the motley group. Hesse captures the human frailty, the pridefulness, and for one, the bleak realization of an unfulfilled life. Beautifully written, this work will satisfy Hesse's fans.

Interesting early novella
By D. Wentworth
Early novella by Hermann Hesse, well done in his usual manner, though it doesn't quite come together in the end. Definitely worth reading for Hesse devotees but, for the casual reader, start with Demian instead.

Early Hesse, but still a great read.
By Dave Gilbert
I may be a tad biased, as I am a huge fan of everything Hesse has written. Although this one of his first novels, Hesse still holds the reader's attention with his keen knack for storytelling. The narrative is tragic and the themes perhaps darker than his later novels, but very readable and instilled with the human pathos found in all his memorable characters. Highly recommended for all Hesse fans!
